Mercedes-Benz’s AMG performance division will soon launch a diesel-powered model, a new report finds. The AMG brand has only produced one diesel-powered vehicle before — the C 30 CDI AMG — but with stricter emissions standards being enacted worldwide, Mercedes is looking for ways to make its performance division a little greener.
Although German automakers have a great amount of experience with diesel powerplants, the idea of oil-burning supercars is still a relatively new idea. Audi was the first company to pioneer a diesel-power race car with the R10 — which was also the first diesel-powered car to win the 12 Hours of Sebring and the 2006 24 Hours of Le Mans, both in 2006 — and followed up with its V12 TDI R8 concept shown at this year’s Detroit Auto Show.
Although Auto Express failed to mention what model — or even what engine — was being considered for the AMG treatment, it did say that Mercedes “is closer than ever to launching an AMG-badged diesel model.”
Check back as more details emerge on the first diesel-powered AMG.

Whatever it is, it’ll probably never be sold in the U.S.

One small problem with the article, AMG did produce an oil burning model, the C 30 CDI AMG. It used a 3.0-liter 5-cylinder diesel.
Cool that they are looking at diesel again…

They forgot to correct the end paragraph that states they are closer than ever. You can’t be “closer than ever” when you’ve done it before. LLNowned.

OK, this diesel probably WILL COME to US shores. Start saving, because you’ll need a lot of change to drive this puppy.

I can easily see some more Mercedes diesels coming to the US market, but not AMG models.
