Mercedes has opened a new performance studio for its AMG division where it will develop its widest range of performance vehicles to date. In addition to production AMG vehicles — such as the CLS 63 or E 63 — the automaker is planning new vehicles in three distinct categories, according to Edmunds. A range-topping “Signature Series” will include models like the CLK DTM — the fastest car to ever made by AMG. A successor to that car is already said to be in the works. The next segment is the “Black Series,” which will include track-ready cars like the recently-introduced special edition 400-horsepower SLK 55. Lastly, the “Edition” series will include customized AMG production vehicles with exterior and interior enhancements to help differentiate them. An existing example would include the CLS55 AMG IWC Ingénieur.

As long as they get more hardcore and more track-based, I’m happy.

They should take the current DTM race car, and change only the things required to make it road legal. Opel has done that a few years ago with the DTM Astra.
I think the AMG CLK DTM isn’t close enough to the race car yet.

just another way to dilute themselves with a million more models…seems like they are the only major european company doing this and imo it makes them seem more like one of the american companies

Mercedes should just spin AMG off as a new company producing the SL SLK SLR to compete with porsche. Mercedes could this way concentrate on coupes and 4 saloons cars.

thats a good idea. these cars are very capable but their performance is hindered by the mercedes badge. a mercedes must be comfortable and automatic.

He isn’t really an idiot. It’s just that AMG has been around a lot longer than he thinks and that AMG produces a very special line of Mercedes’. AMG cars are very well developed and sophisticated.
SRT cars seem little more than a standard car with a big engine. And I believe SRT is a pretty young department (I’m not talking about R/T).
So AMG is already to Mercedes what SRT possibly will be to Chrysler, not the other way around.
