In May, we brought you a story from Germany’s Autobild magazine about a possible revival of the Mercedes 300SL ‘Gullwing’ with a new 2010 model. The report indicated the car would be feature a 750 horsepower engine, 50:50 weight distribution, and pricing between the SL65 and next-generation SLR. In it’s August issue, Automobile magazine features a cover story on the car, with the same artist’s illustration from Autobild. While no new details are given, the fact that a second magazine has republished Autobild’s story suggests insiders are confident the story is accurate. While we wouldn’t put too much faith in the illustration itself, it looks like a Mercedes Gullwing supercar of some description will bow in the next few years. [See our original report here].

would you put a ~$300,000.00 limited production car in a ‘tight’ parking space? I’d be walking 1/4 mile to hit the front door of a store..
and yes, you have seen that front end before… it is a modern interpretation of every late ’50s mercedes. Definately NOT GM Kappa…

I think Mercedes would be going in the right direction to have a coupe that reflects its Gullwing history, however it has to be done right. I think it should not be retro, yet have some subtle ques to let one know this is definately a modern Gullwing 300SL. And no I wouldn’t put any faith in that pic. It’s an artists idea of what i could be like….it looks like a photochop of a Opel Kappa Car and Mercedes Ques….

Gordon Murray, the designer of the McLaren F1, left McLaren Cars over the SLR, saying it was too bloated and compromised a car to bear the name “McLaren.” Meanwhile, a number of years ago, Mercedes purcahsed a 40% stake in McLaren for not only the F1 partnership, but also with the intention that McLaren would build Mercedes’ niche cars. Indeed, McLaren built their new Paragon facility to accomodate that sort of road car production. The SLR ended up threatening that whole partnership and investment.
If this project does end up with McLaren, it will be more to make good on their mutual investments rather than an interest to make another McLaren-Mercedes road car. Worse, Gordon Murray will not be involved.

Gullwing doors actually use less space than traditional swing out doors. I believe that a Gull wing on average uses 22 inches of space when fully oppened while a traditional car door uses 35 inches of space? If someone can confirm that I’d appreciate it.
