The theft argument is very valid here in Europe. Putting a fairly expensive Benz on the streets at night will make sure it ends up in Kiev, Moscow or Uzbloodybekistan within 24 hours.

Well did a little more digging and it appears that this is to keep better track of services done. Since Mercedes says in its warranty to keep the car valid it has to be serviced by MB at certain intervals and of course people thinking MBs dont need oil changes are a big factor. Also there is a huge blackmarket in Russia and Siberia with stolen cars from all over the world being shipped there. Cars from the US and even Brazil are being sold in the FSU states and Mongolia too. Yes Mongolia, they have officially had a MB dealer for 6yrs and even have faster fibreoptic internet.

hasnt BMW been doing this for a while. when my old man’s 745Li had a issue he would get a automated call saying to bring it in for a recall or service issue.

Its a great way to keep track of how Merc users treat their car, and reliability. Audi has been doing this for about 2 yrs. When its brought in for service they hook up the canbus to the newer VAG pc and it beams data over satellite or IP to Ingolstadt.
