Mercedes moves to take over McLaren?

08/15/2006, 7:36 PM

News agency Reuters and Germany’s Auto Bild and Auto Motor und Sport magazines are reporting that DaimlerChrysler plans to acquire the an additional 60 percent of McLaren (it currently owns 40 percent). While the reports only make reference to the McLaren Formula One team, there is speculation online that the deal could also include McLaren’s automotive operations. The AMS report hints to this possibility. In a statement to the DPA, Mercedes said: “It is no secret that DaimlerChrysler have the possibility to increase its 40-per-cent stake in the McLaren group. Whether this happens or not has not been decided.” Mercedes and McLaren have had a somewhat rocky relationship, with on-again, off-again projects. Their last joint street car was the Mercedes SLR McLaren. We’ll keep you posted as the story develops…

Excellent news. With the rumoured new Viper engine in the works with McLaren input, it’s going to be *very* interesting times ahead. :-)

Mercedes should let Mcalren be its own auto maker.
I hate it how whenever mercedes buys a comppany it makes it part of itself. Like mercedes Maybach and Mercedes Mclaren imagine how stupid Ford Jaguar S type sounds. or BMW Rolls Royce Phantom sounds…. JUST LET MCLAREN BE ITS OWN COMPANY EVEN IF THEY OWN IT

Mclaren will be a separate company if bought makin lightweight cars. It will share some feature like engines and some feature that you can’t c like the mechanism is the doors and other such parts.

There was a rumour months ago suggesting that Dr Z wanted to use Mclaren to showcase Mercedes Technology. This is the start

P.s. Mclaren F1 racing and automotive have nothing to do with Mclaren Technologies USA (The company tuning the next viper). It was setup by the same person (Bruce Mclaren) but only as two different brand completely unrelated to each other apart from the name.

I’d love to see Mercedes buy Caparo, makers of the Freestream T1. Be kind of neat if the T1 had the Mercedes symbol on it. Then, Mercedes can claim to have a truly exotic sports car.

Calls for another rear engined Mercedes like CLK-GTR, this time it should be designed for streets and racing no the other way around. V12 7.5L naturally inspired, 6 speed old fashion manual with a top speed of over 250 mph, and throw in the Gullwings and there you have it. Some thing Mercedes should’ve done when Groden Murray was still at Mercedes.

Looks like Mclaren needs more money from Mercedes for its Formula One campaign. I can’t blame them because they are behind Ferrari and Renault. With the way Ilmor-Mercedes engines keep blowing up, Mercedes Benz seem desperate to lock out the Mclaren team on their engines for the long haul. I’m glad Kimi Raikonnen will leave for Ferrari next year. Kimi would have been the F1 champion last year if not for the unreliability of the Mercedes engine.

If you watch F1 then you would know that Ilmor-Mercedes has one of te strongest engines this year and it has rearly blew up this year. Last year there were many unreliability iissues with Mclaren aswell, but this year seems to be the problem of all the good staff leavin to join red ****ty bull racing.

There is a new halo platform that is coming from McLaren and this is the one reasoning why DCx needs the expertise to cut cost among upcoming different vehicles by pushing into one platform.

Three different models from Chrysler

Two from MB

One from Mabach

Think about the ME Four Twelve . . . .

monts, what the hell? the new koinigsegg is powered by a benz V-12 dip ****. same with pagani.

The only point the last comment had right was that monts is a dip****. The Mclaren F1 had some 626bhp to the new koinigsegg’s 850bhp but the koinigg only goes about ten miles mph faster. Put turbo’s in a Mclaren F1 and you could see aroung the same power but top speed improved to around 255-260 mph.

By the way the koinegg has a V8 losely based around the Ford V8. The Pagani does have a Mercedes (AMG tuned) 7.3Ltr engine
