Mercedes planning S-class convertible?

06/21/2006, 11:50 AM

By admin

Mercedes-Benz plans to introduce a four-door convertible based on the S-Class luxury sedan, according to a published report. The V12 car will be unveiled at the Detroit auto show in January, Germany’s Auto Motor und Sport reported Tuesday. The magazine didn’t elaborate further on specifics of the car, but said it is inspired by the 1950s Mercedes 300 four-door convertible. If true, the rumor would represent the latest in a widespread model diversification effort at Mercedes. In recent years, the automaker has broken from its core vehicle lineup and expanded its offerings to contain countless niche vehicles. (See Auto Motor und Sport’s rendering here, and an interesting two-door rendering by CWW Cardesign here.)

Too big for an aluminum roof I suppose, but would be cool to see a retractable hardtop on this … if they really make it, which they might since Merc makes everything these days.

the ONLY way they would even attempt to release a convertible s-class is if it has a foldable hard top. the possibility of this happening is about as slim as the cubs winning a world series. but it would be nice. but when there arent any soft top convertibles in the entire line-up and the slk with one standard the thought of downgrading to a soft top for the range topper in any line for well over 100k is ludicrous and the buyers wont accept it

All it needs is some 26″ spinner rims and candy paint.

Why would they do this? Why wouldn’t they make a more logical CL convertible? Or even a CLS convertible, which would be easier to make (due to the smaller size of the car) and would make it a lot more ‘sporting’.

Um, didn’t you guys know what I meant? And I’m pretty sure people on the Mercedes-Benz blogs use the term Merc for short quite often. Calling someone an idiot for saying that means you need to look in the mirror, try saying something sensical or constructive how bout?

Merc is Mercedes; anyone that thinks that Merc is for Mercury is low class. Plus, seriously when is the last time anyone ever talked about Mercury’s? They are crap and no one even thinks or talks about Mercury anymore.

Jon.

The roof is long enough that if you tried to retract even at low speeds the top is likely to jettison.

Can I just talk about the car for a brief moment? I think that if they do make the 4 door one, I still can’s see how they can make the boot long enough for the canvas roof to sit on top when it is folded. If they just pile the roof up on the boot, it will look horrible and will not work. If Mercedes-Benz are to make such a thing, I would make it a 2-door and a 4-seater like the CLK.

I have a total of 38 Mercedes’ 19 of them are old but i have 5 cls models and 3 of them are convertable i paid about 78,000 for the car then about 40,000 for the hard top to fold down and they look really nice. When the top is up it looks exactly like any other but when it is down i get great looks in fact the other day Jessica Simpson stoped me to ask how much i would sell it for and i said nothing and drove away
