Mercedes planning Sport Activity Coupe?

10/02/2006, 12:07 PM

By admin

DaimlerChrysler’s Mercedes-Benz has registered a trademark in Germany for the letters ‘GLC.’ It’s unclear what the name might be used for, but a “C” typically signifies a “coupe” in Mercedes nomenclature. Could the GLC-Class be the latest addition to the emerging Sport Activity Coupe segment?

BMW is known to be working on a crossover-coupe vehicle called the X6, and rumors began circulating last week about a similar offering from Audi called the Q6. So far, the only Sport Activity Coupe previewed by a mainstream automaker is the Volkswagen Concept A (pictured). The Concept A, however, is not expected to lead directly to a production vehicle. Instead, it was designed to preview the design language of the forthcoming Tiguan crossover.

I know I not the only one who thinks this segment is stupid. The impracticality of a coupe and the handling of an SUV.

Mercedes has around 15 different vechicles now. This is plain stupid and is just deluting the brand. They need to –

A-Class – Change to smart

B-Class – Kill or change to smart

C-Coupe – Kill

C-Class – Start at C240 V6

CLK – Change to suicide four door like Mazda RX8

SLK – Keep the same concept just let AMG make it possibly under their own name and more sportier like Porsche.

GLK – Make and keep

E-class – keep

CLS – Keep as is with a possible convertible version.

SL – Again like the SLK Keep the same concept just let AMG make it to compete with 911.

M-class – Keep as is just better on road and off

G-Class – Make a proper 7 seater for 7 proper adults.

S-Class – Give it more personality

CL – Make it look more classy.

SLR – Let AMG make it

Thats 15 that I could think of. Feel free to add any that I missed

Renton, agreed. My issue with these “SAV”s is not their functionality but their abhorrent looks – I have yet to see one attractive “crossover” prototype from ANY manufacturer – they just look plain silly and stupid to me…

Stuart: I agree with most of what you’re saying but how much more personality can the S-Class and CL be given?

they should also bring the G320 Convertible here – a great niche vehicle, and a great luxury Wrangler.

I’m old enough to remember the Mazda GLC.

I seem to recall they marketed it as the “Good Looking Car” in some of their ads.

Mazda was the first thing I thought of as well. The Mazda GLC was a crappy little subcompact sold until about 1983. Not the image M-Benz wants to invoke.

G-class and R-class included would make it seventeen models.

R-Class – Kill

G-Class – Keep as is just keep updating it.

I’m not sure if this was offered stateside but originally, the GLC had a 1 liter engine!

There doesn’t seem to be any substance to this post. Trademark activity can mean anything, and to say that because the ‘C’ means coupe equals new crossover?… I dunno. If you’re right then you get to gloat, but for now I say that this article is pointless :P

Yes, as pointless as Mercedes calling their 4000lb 2-seater an SL, which stands for “sport light”.

Seriously, I seriously predict an APOCALYPSE for MB because too many models is not good…………

yes, way too many models. you’ll see the brand will be downsizing in a few years. don’t make the same mistake GM made, too many models in too many sectors.

Mazda’s bottom end car in the early 80s was the GLC. Stood for Great Little Car. In MB’s case it stands for Guaranteed Lemon Car.
