Germany’s AutoBild magazine has published new computer renderings of what it says is the 2008 Mercedes-Benz CLK-Class. While we try not to put too much faith in renderings published by magazines, we’re reasonably certain that these images — which show a coupe and convertible — are based on actual insider information and photos. That’s because in recent years, Mr. Huckfeldt — the artist responsible for these renderings — has accurately predicted the appearance of the 2005 BMW 3-Series, 2007 Mercedes S-Class, 2007 Mercedes CL-Class, and many others. The car has split headlights similar to those predicted for the next-generation E-Class. From the side, the CL and CLS influence is obvious, with a very aggressive greenhouse and swooping beltline. The taillight design is unlike anything we’ve seen before from Mercedes. The car most certainly won’t arrive as a 2007 model, but it might arrive for the 2008 or 2009 model years. Look for the CLE, an actual coupe version of the CLS.

I’m on the fence given the renderings. Looks a little like they hired a Japanese design house for the ‘08 CLK. I’d hate it if the classic lines Mercedes is known for went the watered down way of the Acura’s and Lexus’ all together (like when the current CLK taillights were noted as looking like those belonging to a Honda — what a design faux pas!!). On a side note if the new tail end looks at all like the renderings that will be a step in the right direction! I hope the final product still holds true to traditional German lines and proportions… oh and that they never get rid of the pillarless window design. In my opinion one of the most brilliantly simple answers to the coupé treatment ever!
