Mercedes-Benz could again be the number one premium carmaker in terms of unit sales if a favorable trend continues. BMW took over the top spot in 2005 for the first time since 1993, beating Mercedes by 16,000 units, according to Automotive News.
At the end of August, BMW was 20,000 units ahead, but Mercedes has been making significant gains in the second half of 2006. In the past two months Mercedes has sold 10,000 units more than BMW. Sales are being boosted by the new M and GL-Class, according to the report. Whether Mercedes can make up the difference remains to be seen, but we’re certain it will be a close battle.
