Mercedes previews GL 420 Bluetec

Mercedes-Benz will use the upcoming Detroit auto show to reveal its Vision GL 420 Bluetec concept — proof, Mercedes says, that even large, high-performance SUVs can offer economical fuel consumption and extremely low emissions. With a powerful V8 diesel engine that develops 290 hp and 515 lb ft of torque, the anticipated fuel economy is roughly 24 mpg.

Visually, the truck is distinguished by a larger grille, 21-inch wheels, winder fender flares, and custom front and rear aprons. It’s not known if Mercedes plans to use the design elements in a production GL-Class Bluetec vehicle, or another GL variant. Full image after the jump…

More MPG without sacrifice to performance is always welcome. However, the style of the current GL is nicely understated next to the over-the-top Escalade. It would be a shame for MB to now bring the bling to the GL.

But this makes it look more different than the Lexus Lx/Gx…and that’s always welcome also.

Why doesn’t Mercedes-Benz ever consider putting the grill and badge they use on passenger cars (S-class,E-class and C-class) on their SUV. It would look wicked on the GL and ML and make them look different then the previous ML copies like the Kia sorento, Lexus and other SUV’s.

I agree, maybe they should put the grill from their passenger cars on the GL instead of this grill, clearly stolen from the Honda CR-V!

This updated grille looks better because it gives a better distinction compared to the smaller ML class.
