Mercedes S-Class hybrid due later this year

06/06/2007, 11:17 AM

By Nick

Mercedes-Benz will reveal a hybrid version of its S-Class sedan this fall, according to a report by Germany’s Auto Motor und Sport. It will deliver estimated fuel economy of 35 mpg, the report says.

The S-Class hybrid is designed to rival the Lexus LS 600h, which recently went on sale. The hybrid LS delivers 430 horsepower via a five liter V8 coupled to electric motors.

The car will almost certainly sell for over $100,000, and should arrive at dealerships in late 2008 as a 2009 model. It will be previewed, however, at the Frankfurt Auto Show in September.

Now we’re making sense. Time to start rolling out engines that are both powerful and green. I’m all pro reducing carbon emissions and cutting back on foreign oil, but I’m not about to give up my S4 for a Prius or those Honda cartoonish cars that look straight outta the 60s. Give me 500hp at 50mpg.

It wouldn’t do much if it costs a lot more than the LS 600h.

I still don’t understand why MB is releasing overlaping classes, like B with R, GL and ML, but still they are not producing any hatchback to face with A3, 1-series, while A class is a Mini rival.
