The Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Convertible is great for going fast in a straight line and starting earthquakes with its thunderous exhaust note, but the drop top apparently has one other lesser known talent - catching golf balls at 120mph.
It may sound odd but Mercedes-Benz has just set a new world record for recording the "farthest golf shot to be caught in a moving car." The stunt was pulled of by AMG brand ambassador David Coulthard and professional golfer Jake Shepherd.
The premise was simple enough - Shepherd would hit a golf ball off a tee while Coulthard sped down an empty runway in a SLS AMG Convertible in hot pursuit of said golf ball. Of course the variables of the golf ball's flight path and Coulthard's ability to drive at speeds up to 120mph while tracking down a small object traveling at 178mph made the stunt a little more difficult in practice, but the two eventually hooked up for the world record.
To make things official, the folks from Guinness World Record were on hand to witness the event. After the attempt was verified, both Coulthard and Shepherd were etched into the record books.
