Mercedes to debut production ML hybrid at New York show

04/03/2009, 11:54 AM

By Drew Johnson

After a supplier issue spoiled its first attempt at a ML hybrid, Mercedes-Benz will reportedly show a production version of its ML450 Hybrid at next week’s New York Auto Show. The ML450 Hybrid is set to join Mercedes’ other hybrid, the S400 BlueHybrid, in showrooms later this year.

Based on the 2007 concept, the ML450 Hybird is said to offer V8 performance yet return over 30 mpg. Earlier indications suggest the ML hybrid would use a 3.0L diesel V6, but it looks as though the ML450 Hybrid will use the same 3.5L gas V6 used in the S400 BlueHybrid. In S400 hybrid-guise, the 3.5L makes 279 horsepower, aided by a 20 horsepower electric motor.

Whatever the powertrain ends up being, the ML hybrid will feature stop/start technology and the ability to run on electric power alone. Lithium-ion batteries will power the SUV’s electric motor.

The electric motor is tipped to add another 118 lb-ft of torque, which should legitimately give the SUV a V8-feel.

Check back for more details and live images of the ML450 Hybrid in just a few days.

This CUV is the answer to a question that nobody asked. The same thing with diesel cost less and consumes less.

Need more oil for GM

What a joke. Buy a Tahoe hybrid if you want a real SUV with real capability and real quality and reliability. This posuer POS wannabe is a joke.

Buy American. Buy GM

I sort of agree with NMOFGM. Go for the Cadillac Escalade Hybrid Platinum Edition if you want a real luxury hybrid SUV–definitely has more bling :)
