Mercedes to use GLK name for small SUV

06/27/2006, 3:42 PM

By admin

In late March, Leftlane reported that Mercedes had registered the name GLK-Class with the U.S. patent and trademark office. This suggested the German automaker would use the GLK name for its compact SUV, instead of the much-rumored MLK nameplate. While it took a while for the mainstream media to catch on to this notion, Germany’s Autobild is now reporting that Mercedes has decided to use the GLK moniker over MLK-Class or X-Class. The magazine also claims Mercedes has picked a relatively boxy design for the vehicle, with an upright D-pillar to best maximize interior space. The first models will be available in late 2008, including the GLK 220 CDI, GLK 280 GLK, GLK 320 CDI 4Matic and GLK 350 4Matic. [Front View | Rear View]

This segment should heat up with in the next 1-2 years, with contestants like the Acura RDX, Cadillac BRX, Mercedes GLK, Land Rover LR2 and BMW X3 competing.

Looks alright I’m not surprised. I could care less though. These companies need to focus on their reliability problems instead of releasing 4 completely new models a year though.

Soo are they going to offer this in 2wd model? It looks that way if they are making a seperate 4matic trim line.

Well, first off, of course this is subjective, but I think it’s kinda ugly.

Secondly, and WAY more importantly, Mercedes should stop making so many different letter and number combinations. If they’re gonna have what.. like 50 somewhat models, they should use names that are easier to memorize. Jeez!

Oops… pressed submit by accident.

But here’s what I mean. The only difference in the name of their biggest SUV and their smallest SUV is the K. When I first read “Mercedes to use GLK name for small SUV” I thought that they meant they were going to stop making the big SUV and use the GLK name for the small one instead. Then I went to their website cuz it just didn’t make sense and found out that the big one is called the GL.

That’s a HUGE difference and the name is almost exactly the same thing!

Well Pruce, it kind of does make sense, since the ‘K’ featured on the CLK, SLK and soon, this GLK actually stands for the German word ‘kompact’, which roughly translates into english as ‘compact’. Thus, MB is saying that this upcoming SUV/crossover is a GL Kompact. Which makes sense.

Whatever the name, it’s still darn ugly. Not to mention it’s pointless. No thanks.

The Cadillac BRX is going to make all the competition look silly, worthless piles of crap. Cadillac will rule the segment as they do with the rest of their lineup
