sorry piablo i was vague your point was realistic and very well stated (as usual), man mabey 1% mabey at most, while the earth is doing the rest. thats why i brought up how a single volcano is worse than everything 5 billion humans are doing, we live on a giant fireball for petes sake. :) its all scare tactics and bullshit and just another way for the greenies to run our lives. we seem to see things for face value more than some of the rest. i do wonder bout the ozone layer we really havnt been able to check it until recently and found a hole, its not like we saw the whole develop while looking at it.

Consider: When man released emissions into the atmosphere, this damages the ozone layer, and causes more heat to get through. I've simplified this for you. I'm not sure what you don't understand about that concept, it's very basic, it's not a guess, a gamble, or a theory that our noxious emissions are widening the gap in the ozone layer. That's a fact. And yes, while the earth has had numerous cycles, ice ages, period of thawing, etc, this is the first time man has been around. So, what that means to you and me is that while I'm sure the earth has warmed before, it did so because of natural cycles and natural reasons. This time, it's because of man. All of those previous warmings that occurred on earth were when man wasn't around with pollution, but now man is, and polluting is exactly what we're doing. The warming that is occurring now is not due to a natural cycle of thawing, it is due to our emissions, this is an agreed upon theory, and only the most delusional deny it. I'll reiterate, yes, many periods of natural warming have occurred before, but this was before pollution, pollution is real, it's happening now, and it is causing global warming. The end. You are wrong, you're being blinded Piablo, wake the hell up

PIABLO, I understand your point about other factors and the tail end of the ice age, the earth cycles between ice ages. other factors well beyond our controll are volcanos that spew more toxins into the air than all of the cars combined, remember mount pinatubu (or however you spell it) actually cooled the earth by a degree but that was the dust emitted the toxins stayed for the long haul.Or the methane deposits in the oceans constanty boiling into the atmosphere, but i realy do believe us humans are adding to the cycle but not as much as gore would tell you. i mean these are chemicals involved that are not found in nature, and everybody that said america had no clue in the tokyo accords and pulled out, again there were other factors such as the huge burnoff of natural gas in russia and nigeria that burn 365 days a year, those are big issues that nobody wanted to address, so if the gamefield is pre-rigged then why play.

Piablo: Please don't tell me you're ignoring science, over 250 top climatologists all over the world agree that global warming is in fact real, it's been accepted by modern science to be the reality, I usually disagree with you on most points, but if you're really that blind and delusional, then you truly have no hope.

europrospective: The thing is, the Prius DOESN'T consume the same as another car, it might not reach what the EPA says it will, but what car actually does? The Prius and other hybrids (save the shitty Chevy Silverado hybrid) still do get far superior mileage to their gasoline counterparts, regardless of whether or not the mileage they achieve is less than what the EPA predicts they will get. Like I said, my dad'd Prius gets in the mid 40's, it's not the 60 that the EPA says it'll get, but it's still way better than a gasoline powered Camry, Altima, or any other midsize sedan.

LamboghiniZ,

Emissions are proportional to your fuel consumption. If a Prius is consuming as much fuel as another car on the daily commute, then it will be emitting similar levels of pollution. Remember that the hybrid concept is about using less fossil fuels, thus polluting less.

Piablo: maybe its not all about the numbers of MPG, maybe, JUST MAYBE, it also has something to do with, GOSH, reducing emissions! What a concept none of you people seem to grasp, I realize it's a difficult one to wrap your minds around, especially you Piablo, but get a grip. Also, my dad's Prius generates mileage in the mid 40's, find another midsize sedan with it's kind of flexibility in seating, cargo, etc, that gets that kind of mileage and isn't a hybrid, regardless of whatever % you're throwing out there.

I really don't think the current criticism of hybrids/electric cars is terribly valid.

Yes, there are some problems that need to be worked out, like battery life/disposal etc. But I have no doubt that pure electric cars are more than likely the next real evolution of the automobile. It's just going to take time to engineer them.

Consider that it wasn't until some 40 or so years after the invention of the internal combustion automobile that top speeds for production cars started to crack 100mph. And this was only achieved with mammoth inline engines producing less power than a Prius, and most likely getting about zero miles to the gallon.

Now consider that every minute of the day the earth intercepts more energy in the form of solar radiation than the total amount of energy consumed in fossil fuel every year. And that our ability to harness solar energy is is rapidly increasing.

So, yeah, hybrids are a stopgap solution. But only until pure electric cars become completely feasible.

It's amazing to me how a 22 year old, freshly out of college, who is just starting to make their own money for a change, who is looking for a new car, reads up on a few cars, thinks they are the end all & be all of automotive knowledge. Exactly like Homeboy. Z06 is correct, the Saab's dont acheive anywhere near the 47mpg. My cousin own's one, & he even babyies it. Hal has a valid point, the Brit gallons are larger than the States'. Homeboy's colourful language is due to the fact that his pride couldn't accept that he was called out.

It’s amazing to me how a 22 year old, freshly out of college, who is just starting to make their own money for a change, who is looking for a new car, reads up on a few cars, thinks they are the end all & be all of automotive knowledge. Exactly like Homeboy. Z06 is correct, the Saab’s dont acheive anywhere near the 47mpg. My cousin own’s one, & he even babyies it.
Actually, hybrids do suck. They're a big con game if you ask me. A feel good solution to imaginary problems. News just came out, which LLN failed to report on ( I wonder why...), the Prius actually gets 22% less than it's advirtised EPA estimates. 22% less actually brings it down around the level of this Mercedes or any other 40+/-mpg car. And the others do it with loads more horsepower and without 2000lbs of nickel-metal hydride batteries. Hybrids are a knee jerk reaction to public hysteria.

Real solutions to better cars will start with evaluating many of the laws shackling automotive design. I love watching these futuristic shows about cars where they showcase the 'future' of car design and what we'll be driving in 20 years, which is a whole sham because the current laws forbid most of those vehicles! It's so bad these days that the biggest question regarding a KTM X Bow is "But is it legal??!?!".

Good for Mercedes not bowing to the battery operated crowd.

Is gas really still that cheap in the states? I'm amazed that you guys care about mileage at all. By my reckoning the UK price is currently $6.50 / USGal. and that's not the highest in Europe.

I hope they bring it here. This car addresses my wants and possibly future needs, with RWD and 43 mpg. I expect that gas is going to be 3 and possibly 4 dollars a gallon shortly, this is a way make the sting a little less harsh.

Just wait for Mercedes Benz to wheel out a Blutec hybrid that DOES get over 70 MPG...

Besides... is that 43 MPG under the old EPA formula or the new one?

This months "Car and Driver" took a look at the Altima hybrid, which claims MPG in the 40's. They drove it pretty hard and came up with 23MPG, which is the exact same figure they got they hammered the 4-cylinder version. So again, a $4,000 premium for what? If you baby the thing, then maybe you'd get some slightly better numbers, but what's the point of a 199hp car if you are going to drive it like a Prius?

I think the C Class will look better on the road than it does in the photos. I don't think anyone will mistake it for a japanese/korean sedan. I just wish the sebring looked a bit more muscular and aggressive like this.

Let's not be fanatical A4, hybrids clearly don't suck, I know you've got your clear blind biases, but try and not be too ignorant.

This is a good step forward for diesels, the E320 Bluetec is a bit on the expensive side, if the C-Class had a nice diesel like this it would open up this option for more consumers.

This is good news for everyone who appreciates an engine that achieves high fuel mileage yet has lots of torque at the same time. Good job, Mercedes-Benz!

My guess is homeboy is writing from the UK and doesn't know that US gallons (3.7L) are smaller than UK (4.5L)gallons and also that a lot of diesel models sold in Europe aren't available in the US because they don't meet emission standards in some states.

Way to go Mercedes. Now if you could only do something about getting BlueTec approved in the states.
Last I heard the EPA was not keen on additives that need to be replenished. I agree with someone one the boards whho stated that the car should not run w/o the additive. Like if it had no Diesel. Still, good step.

Homeboy, yes we yanks drive gas cars that average 25mpg on a good day. Having a 43mpg diesel IS something to look forward to.

but would truly get 43 mpg? sounds like a rate from benz. the rate from toyota on the prius is like 60 mpg... people that have know its nowhere near that. so if benz says 43, its probably more like mid 30s.
