Mini forced to recall cars for too-long tailpipes

12/23/2008, 11:33 AM

By Andrew Ganz

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is forcing BMW, which owns Mini, to recall all 2007-2009 Cooper S coupes because their tailpipes stick out too far beyond the rear bumper. The NHTSA is concerned that “inadvertent contact [could] occur with a person’s leg” should they walk behind the Cooper S, the defect notice states.

Dealers have to remove a tailpipe extender and replace it with one a few inches shorter – free of charge for Mini owners, of course. The tail pipe extender installed at the factory doesn’t actually serve a purpose – it’s just cosmetic, so it won’t change performance of the Cooper S.

Mini is to begin contacting owners in January to schedule tailpipe extender replacements. In the meantime, try not to light your pants on fire when you walk around the back of your Mini Cooper S.

This wouldn’t have happened if everyone was driving electric-powered Mini Es… see our Quick Spin here.

You’re kidding me, right? Too long a tail pipe is a hazard? What’s next, too big of a back-up light? Too long of a shifter?

OMG, no way, the world is coming to a fukin end!!! you might as well say that the car is too long because they run into the bumper too!!!!!!!! this is the dumbest recall ever. I’m going to walk behind a running mini with a burning hot exhaust so i can sue them !! thanks for the great idea dumb a$$es, I needed money for school anyways!

You have to be walking on the car to hit your leg with a tailpipe, or just a complete idiot.

So, none of you ever walked around the back of a car in a tight parking area and banged your leg on the bumper?

I knew this would be full of comments ridiculing people who walk too close to the back of a car.

The next time it happens to you, or your kid, let’s see what you have to say. If you saw the burn that these extenders cause to people’s legs, you should shut up.

Johnny, HA! Excellent. True about trailer hitches, but those are mostly aftermarket aren’t they? And, what about all the pickups with the exhaust tips sticking straight out the back, about 6-12″ behind the “America, Love It Or Leave It” bumpersticker? BMW won’t be happy with this recall, they’re not doing too well as it is.

Yea I can’t say I would be happy if my kid or spouse were to suffer a burn from something like this, but I can’t say I would be impressed with either of them for putting their leg on a hot exhaust pipe. It has been known ever since the first building of an automobile that an exhaust pipe gets hot after the cars been running and most people figure this out without ever having to touch it and get burned. When you look at the exhaust of a car especially when its running it is pretty obvious that you probably shouldn’t touch it as it vibrates and coughs out the occasional wisp of fumes and generally looks alive. What we are dealing with here is multiple cases of people suffering from stupidity; the stupidity had gotten so severe that it caused a burn which triggered the classic modern-American behavior we have come to call blame. It is so easy to blame other people for things here that a car company is being blamed for burning someone’s leg with their obtrusive exhaust; did a Mini representative come out to all these people and push them into the hot exhaust? No they burned themselves on something hot like a hundred million people have before them in the US alone, next thing you know someone will blame an oven manufacturer for making the heating coils too obtrusive even though they simply burned their hand like a retard.

Are you all crazy? The problem is not that the tail pipe is too long so that people will bang into it like you could bang your shin on a shopping cart at Wal-mart. It is that the tail pipe is HOT, causing burn even with a quick contact. That longer tail pipe is no better than a shorter one, so then why have it?

Ketzer, when is the last time you look down to make sure you don’t touch the tail pipe when you loaded grocery? Like NEVER? How many of us actually check the position of our tail pipe on a regular basis? This is not the same as if someone sees a sheet of ice on the sidewalk and decides to walk on it anyway. This is neither open nor obvious.

No one would have thought Mini-BMW would design such a long tail pipe, but they did, so they should recall it. Also, Ketzer, unless you own a 2007-09 Mini Cooper S, your low tech experiment is irrelevant because the designers of the car you own probably did NOT design such a long tail pipe.

You are presupposing that people touch the tail pipe purposely. What the NHTSA is protecting is inadvertent contact with the tail pipes. Have you considered why this recall ONLY affects 2007-09 Mini Cooper S, and not other cars? That suggests that this is indeed a design flaw, and not stupidity, unless you have some statistics of Mini buyer being more stupid than Camry buyers, etc.

“next thing you know someone will blame an oven manufacturer for making the heating coils too obtrusive even though they simply burned their hand like a retard.”

Purpose of an oven is to heat up food, so people assume the risk of being burned. But you don’t assume getting burned by your car tail pipe while loading grocery. Again, no one in the right mind would touch the tail pipe on purpose, nor would anyone assume the tail pipe on their car would stick out so far that they have to be walking around it. Perhaps Mini/BMW should include a pair of motorcycle boots for their buyers.

I’ve burned my leg on a motorcycle exhaust pipe once. Left a scar. Not fun. However, I can’t believe that the Mini’s tailpipes are really long enough for someone to run into them.

I’m sorry Sharpie, but when I go grocery shopping I turn my car off while I’m shopping. Therefore, It cools while I’m inside. Also, most people do not want to smell like exhaust and therefore do not stand behind or near the exhaust pipe. Simple solution is to just not step under your car, and use your shins as leverage causing them to bow backwards when loading and unloading your car.

All the same, I guess it’s better to do it this way instead of having another McDonald’s hot coffee bimbo situation.

NRG – So have I. On multiple occasions. As well as my arm, lol. Can still see the scar on my arm too.

Lawyers and Judges are just trying to make an honest (cough) living; just trying to eke by like the rest of us.. at an out-of-school starting wage of $80,000-$100,000 minimum! Nice “starting” salary, most people that work for 20 years don’t make that in architecture. It’s my own fault, I could have chosen to be an attorney if I wanted to I guess. I can’t really blame them, money is a powerful, addicting thing. But, are the exhaust tips really THAT hot? The ones on my TT aren’t hot enough to really burn a person if you touched them.

Okay. Lame.

How about taking some responsibility for yourselves, people.?

I tried to grip a tail pipe of a VW bug when I was four. Dumb? Maybe. But I never did it again. I never cried about it nor told my parents, just ran my hand under some water until it stopped hurting. No, I didn’t burn my hand. If I did grip that pipe I might have.

The tailpipes on a MINI Cooper are not too long. The Trial judges are too lenient to even hear stuff like this. This car has been out of at least four years and it took till now, when every one seems to be going broke, to bring this up.

Spare me.

Some of you guys surprise me daily with your ignorance.

Just like those people who accidentally hit their shins on your truck.

Or your motorcycle exhaust.

It’s not a big deal. People don’t look out for hot exhaust pipes from a Mini. For that matter, unusually, defective hot tail pipes. Sometimes people rub against things accidentally. It’s not like their sticking their feet underneath there. How many times have you accidentally dropped a wrench in the garage because you brushed against the table? Or spilled your coffee cup accidentally? It’s not something that happens because your not being careful, just being unaware. And the fix is so simple- their taking off a freaking exhaust extender. A piece that cost a dollar, that’ll just save BMW a buck or two later.

Gundy- “But, are the exhaust tips really THAT hot?”

That’s what’s called a design defect.
