MINI ’s model lineup has been following an upward trend as of late –with the larger Clubman and the soon-to-be Crossman crossover – but a new model could be in the works that is better aligned with MINI’s traditional DNA.
According to an Autocar report, MINI is readying a two-seat roadster model to compliment its Cooper convertible. A MINI roadster has been rumored for some time now, but a near production model could surface as early as September’s Frankfurt Motor Show.
Although the two-seat design means a smaller cabin, the back seat delete should ensure the MINI roadster has more usable cargo space than its drop top stable mate. The roadster will employ a conventional soft top, a measure that should keep the car’s weight down.
While there is evidence to support the roadster will ride on the Cooper’s platform, there have also been rumblings that the roadster could be based on the BMW 1-Series . We’ll just have to wait until September to know for sure.
Whatever the case, the roadster promises to be the most sporting model in MINI’s lineup. The roadster will be lower and wider than any current MINI model, and should come equipped with an upgraded sports suspension.
A MINI Speedster is also said to be in the works, but it remains unclear when that model might surface.
