While many industry analysts have called ailing Mitsubishi's future into question due to the automaker's dated and somewhat underwhelming product lineup, the latest voice of criticism comes not from an outside source but from within the company.

"I don't know why people buy a Mitsubishi," Mitsubishi Australia CEO Mutsuhiro Oshikiri said in an interview with the Sydney Morning Herald. "That is a simple question, difficult answer that I have to think about for the next three or four months. What is the benefit? Why do we have to be here? What is the future? I have to find out."

Oshikiri, who joined Mitsubishi ten weeks ago, acknowledged that the automaker's recent products have been flawed in certain aspects.

"In most cases, we have a similar complaint [about a particular car] and we feel shame, because if everybody says different [problems with the car] it's OK, but if everybody says the same thing, we are idiots - we didn't do the proper thing," Oshikiri said.

Much like its Australian lineup, Mitsubishi's U.S. roster is characterized largely by a dearth of fresh product. It's also getting smaller, with the Galant sedan and Eclipse sports car set to be discontinued at the end of the 2012 model year. While Mitsubishi does have an updated 2013 Outlander Sport on the way, it remains to be seen if it will be enough to revive the automaker's flagging fortunes.
