Mitsubishi teases production cX crossover

10/29/2009, 4:07 PM

By Drew Johnson

Our spy photographers have been tracking the production version of the cX concept for several weeks now, but Mitsubishi has now released an official sketch of the forthcoming crossover. Mitsubishi confirmed the cX was production bound a little over a year ago.

While the overall shape of the cX concept seems to be intact, it looks as if the production model has grown a bit in size, especially behind the rear doors. It comes as no surprise that the Mitsubishi’s “fighter-jet” nose along with aggressive headlights and taillights appear on this test car, as well as the latest teaser sketch. We can also see the character lines on the doors of the cX concept have translated well to the production model.

The production cX will ride on Mitsubishi’s GS platform — the same that underpins the Lancer. Power for this yet-unnamed CUV is expected to come from a line of naturally aspirated four-cylinder motors, with the top end motor possibly being turbocharged. Mitsubishi’s SST dual-clutch transmission will be offered on the production cX.

This 5-passenger CUV will be a global product for Mitsubishi and will go on sale first in the U.S. in Q4 of 2010. Japan sales will kick off in early 2010 with European sales slated to begin after the car’s Euro introduction at March’s Geneva show. PSA Peugeot Citroen will also be getting versions of the cX, much like the current arrangement with the Mitsubishi Outlander.

well, since they all seem to be riding on the same basic platform, why not? I’m worried about the next Eclipse.

I don’t see a point in this if the they already have a Lancer Sport-back. Well, as far as the camouflaged model.

I really only like that nose on the Lancer, but it might be a nice car if the turbo version has enough power.

I bought my GTS last summer, and while I still love its looks, I completely agree that Mitsu is getting pretty uninspired with all this reliance on the same nose for most of their line up.
