Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution IX FQ-360

07/14/2006, 3:13 PM

By admin

Mitsubishi has announced a new more powerful version of its Lancer Evolution IX sports car for the British market. So far, there has been no word if the car will come to other parts of Europe or here to North America. A development of the FQ-340, the new FQ-360 features a 366 hp version of Mitsubishi’s 2.0-litre turbo engine. The Engine Control Unit (ECU) has been fully reprogrammed to create a car that delivers 366bhp at 6887rpm and 363lb ft of torque at 3200rpm. The torque output is the key to this car’s character. The peak output of 363lb ft is 8lb ft more than the FQ-400 produced and is delivered 2200rpm lower down the rev range. It’s also 18lb ft more than the FQ-340. The car will sprint from 0-60mph in an estimated 4.1sec and top 160mph. It will cost £35,504 in the UK. Gallery after the jump…

Atleast in the US market, Mitsubishi needs to come up with a version of the Lancer that fits between the Evo and basic Lancer with respect to price/performance. Simlar to the way Subaru has the WRX between the regular Impreza and STi. 30K+ for the Evo and STi is steep for cars based on economy compacts, regardless of their performance. The 25k price/performance of the WRX is a much better value, and Mitsubishi should look to come in below that and capture some of that market.

I agree, #6. Sure the performance is brilliant in these cars, but the comfort level is sub-par for the price tag.

Mike,

I left the SRT-4 Neon off the list becuase sadly, it is gone. However it did fit in exactly the market niche that I was describing, albeit near the bottom with the Civic Si and Cobalt SS/Ion Redline. I say near the bottom because they don’t carry the added cost of an AWD drivetrain.

Tw,

No, the Cobalt SS can’t do 0-60 in 4.1 seconds, but then again it doesn’t cost 65K USD either.

366 H.P. from a 2L motor means one of two things:

1. Large Turbo Lag

or

2. Runs out of breath at the top end,(that’s where I live).

^ While that may be true, it isn’t necessarily so. Modern engineering can eliminate or minimize turbo lag… it’s all at a cost however.

Current schemes include multiple smaller turbos, or turbos with variable vanes.

Many factory turbo applications are nearly imperceptible nowadays.

I’m not sure about this Evo though.

I saw this car at work, and I thought to myself “what a LOSER CAR!”. Some car guys love this beast, but I have to agree with the guy who wrote “uglier than homemade sin”. What can’t BIG RICE put the drive train in a 240Z body?! A 1970 Datsun 240Z body buffed up or whatever de-bugged with Toyota cyborg dead-tech technology and market it as a nifty retro package. Like VW did with thwe Beetle. Except the original Beetle is still prize find.

35504 GBP = 65370.05 USD according to the crappy conversion site I found wtih Google. Holy crap, man, I think I could buy two regular STIs for that. And I’d rather have two of those… I mean, it would be a daily driver with a great way of passing cars that are too slow in the fast lane of the highway, really. I don’t really care whether it goes 0-60 in 4.1 or 4.7 seconds, I mostly care whether or not I can go from 65-75 without my car engine taking 10 or so seconds to do it, like my piece of crap car does now with its silly low-torque engine with a crappy drive ratio… :sigh: besdies, I still don’t trust mitsu’s reliability, I’d rather have a subaru in that regard, warranty or no.

why cant you guys stop hatin on a balls out performance car?sure its not pretty, but it also costs significantly less than a M3 in the UK,and will beat the crap out of a m3 on the track. too expensive?look at how much a freaking 911 costs in the UK(at least twice as much)

You guys should stop being so ignorant. A direct conversion from GBP to dollars makes no sense. Usually with cars, it’s 1 dollar to 1 pound. So if this was available in the US it would most likely be around $35,000, just like how the Z06 which is $60,000 in the US costs GBP60,000 in UK which is equivalent to $111,000.

Not to be a smart a$$, but most folks have the same reaction to my MR UNTIL they either drive it or I take them for a nice jaunt down the twisties. The only reason I bought this car was for the shear FUN I got out of the test drives- after a Sti test drive, after a G35 6 speed T/D. The looks grew on me…..so don’t knock it ’til ya try it- test drive an Evo then T/D a Colbalt SS- you’ll laugh at the SS. I know I did.

John,

Its just over priced for what it is.
You can get a new Evo IX for $30,000 drop just under 3 Grand into it and have 360 horse power at the wheels.
The Evo may be ugly, but she can sure cook.

GM was smart enough to buy a good percentage of Subaru but not smart enough to build the Cobalt SS strong enough to compete with STi or the Evo.
