Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution MR to hit U.S. dealers in June

Mitsubishi has announced that its range-topping 2008 Lancer Evolution MR will begin rolling into U.S. showrooms this June. The Lancer Evolution MR promises to be slightly more refined than the Lancer Evolution GSR, but will still offer world-class performance.

The MR comes with more standard features than the “base” GSR — such as Mitsubishi’s six-speed Twin Clutch Sportronic Shift Transmission — but that added technology will come at a price. The MR will retail from $38,290.

Throw in an optional technology package — which includes a 30GB hard drive navigation system with music server, 650-watt Rockford-Fosgate Premium Sound System, pre-paid Sirius Satellite Radio capability and FAST Key entry — and the MR’s price balloons to $40,840.

While the Lancer Evolution is a very good car, a $40,000 Mitsubishi might be a hard pill for many buyers to swallow. However, with the Evo’s following as strong as it is, anything is possible.

  2. 40k? Are they serious?

Save a little more and buy a Vette… for crying out loud. It’s just a hopped up… oversized… overpriced grocery getter that looks like something out of a F&F movie.

  3. Buy a vette, lol. Get a Boxster or a Cayman for some proper handling fun

  4. uhhh an elise? thats retarded. You cannot have an elise as a daily driver. The EVO is a great year round car.

  5. Mits makes great automobiles, but this one will probably sit on lots until year end sales because of its price. Not saying that it isn’t worth it, just that it doesn’t carry the general acceptance in this category that others currently do.

  6. yes it is a niche vehicle but find another brand new AWD car with this kind of performance for $38k. The A3 3.2 runs the same price range and isnt nearly as fast. Its a different category than RWD 2 door sports cars.

  7. how can you not have an elise as a daily driver? you buy a car- you drive it? simple as that, where in the rule of buying cars says you need to have one daily driver and one weekend car

  8. This might be the greatest car ever made but it still makes whoever drives it look really stupid.

  9. I would take the Vette over the Porsches, since the Vette is as fuel efficient as the Porsches and have a V8

  10. LaCa… a Boxster? Please… my 20k Cobalt SS can out run and out handle a Boxster.

Cayman S maybe… maybe. But last time I checked a C6 is still the best performance bang for the buck.

  11. So by the time Canadian’s see it we’ll be looking at over 50k after provincial and federal taxes. This is the SRT-4 syndrome all over again. They may look cool and go reasonably fast, but at the end of the day you’re still driving a Neon or a Caliber.

  12. So where is the stripper version with cloth interior, manual windows, no radio, & no wing for $25k?

  13. This car is nothing like that joke of a car the SRT-4 Johnny, in fact this car is one of the most uncompromising cars around in my opinion. Want furious AWD speed that can best most street cars? Want 4 doors? Want a trunk that you can actually put things in? Want Japanese reliability? All these factors are what make the Evo and its direct competitor the STi so attractive.

  14. F3INT))AP3X: so except for the AWD, an additional $15K and (questionable in Mitsu’s case) Japanese reliability, what exactly is the difference?

  15. Hey Jumpoffit,
Have fun trying to drive an elise in the winter in any of the northern states. There may not be snow where you live but there is a ton here in Cleveland. An evo would be a hell of a lot easier to drive year round than an elise.

  16. The difference between this and the SRT-4 that makes the 15k gap is everything johnny. You can always go down in price on an Evo and get the 5spd manual GSR but this is the MR we are talking about, the top trim. It has everything I mentioned above plus a lot more. Here is a list of things the Evo MR has that the SRT-4 does not: AWD, 6spd Dual Clutch SST gearbox w/ paddle shifters, interior quality, Brembo rotors and calipers, Bilstein dampers and suspension, BBS wheels, Nav system and technology packages,HID headlights, adaptive power steering, adaptive suspension, and a million computer programs that help it handle better than most other cars like S-AWC, ACD, and AYC.

  18. id go with a BMW 135i over this.. def.. and seriously ur gonna look like u got the car of an F&F auction..

  19. Okay can we please kill the ridiculous stereotype that just because it has a spoiler and a few air intakes it’s a “Fast and the Furious” car. I mean seriously go watch the movie none of the cars look like this. Also RTT10 lets break down what you may consider to make a car ricey. In fact lets compare the Evo to the famed RT10 Viper. The Evo has front air intakes, some little exhaust flanges on the hood, and a spoiler. The RT10 has, well, some front air intakes, some little exhaust flanges on the hood, and a spoiler……..

  20. I’m a bit confused wasn’t the MR the Top-of-the-line, stripped for racing EVO? This makes it sound like it is the “luxo” version.

  21. stylewise it looks better than the sti, but like johnny said, mitsus reliability is quite questionable and subarus can deal lots of abuse in a rally course.

  22. jumpoffit, I like your logic and wish I could abide by that. I always had a tendency to want a car that would be both my weekend car/track car and daily driver. I guess you just have to sacrifice some versatility for performance, and depending on what you are looking at as well. EVO is a great car, and it’s reputation is certainly that. Unfortunately what I think made the EVO so attractive was its bang for buck factor however now that it’s encroaching 40k that’s not so much the case any more. Does make a great all year round choice, but I’d still get the GSR and add my own mods and save myself 6k.

  23. I witnessed a 2008 Z06 vette get traded in for an ‘08 GSR!!! The dealer was Roger Burdick Mitsubishi, the owner had to travel 300 miles and be on a waiting list for 6mos. to get this ‘vette, but he admitted it wasn’t a drivers car and all the faults he found wrong with a vette he was thrilled by the EVO GSR. For the $40k sure it’s hefty but the gear box is already touted as the “best in the business” try your hand at DSG then try TC-SST. Subarus will never match Mitsu in shear technology, Research investment is greater…Bank of Tokyo is owned by Mitsu and so is the Nikkei Average(stock market) mitsu’s are harder to tame there for the rewards are greater!!! pulls over 1G in lateral accel? that’s crazy!!! I’ll take mine in phantom black!

  24. What is the specs on the MR? hp?

EVO’s are straight up road cars now. They pretty much gave up in racing.

  25. Wasn’t the point of this car and the STI to offer great performance at an affordable price? They have become what they were meant to combat. You can buy a lot of car for 40K…used 911, M3, etc and have money left over for serious upgrades.

  26. I’d love to see a schmuck who will drive 20K car from dealership for which he just sucked in 40 large!

  27. Anyone that rips these cars has never driven one. You can criticize the style or interior of this car. But the chassis and drivetrain are world class. RS was the stripped rally build ready car in the previous gen and was only 27K sticker. It deleted rear wing, had a stripped interior, had reg headlaps ad lesser seats and shocks, also did w/5spd instead of 6.
RS is coming soon but I think it will have only 235 HP and std 5 spd. Rumoerd to be only 24K.
Also Im preying they rejoin WRC to promote this car, although it seems pretty big.
Part of me thinks this and the STI have gotten to big for rally cars. Anyone remember the group B Peugot T16, pint size beast. Look it up on you tube.

  28. When you buy a STI….Subaru sends you a free membership for scca. Mitsubishi sends “agents” to the track to watch people and rescinds their warranties when they see EVOs racing.

    Suck it Mitsu!

Shaver, yeah basically what the RS would be it’s going to be the new Lancer Ralli Art Edition that you are actually referring to. From my knowledge there will not be an RS with this gen Lancer, but that doesn’t mean there won’t be in the future.
