The Outlander is Mitsubishi's smallest SUV offering in North America. The compact crossover is built on the same platform as the Dodge Caliber and Chrysler Sebring -- the result of a partnership with Chrysler.
The entry-level Outlander ES model is powered by a fuel-efficient 2.4-liter 168 horsepower aluminum DOHC MIVEC four-cylinder engine teamed with a new Sportronic CVT transmission.
The more premium LS and XLS models are powered by a 3.0-liter 220 horsepower aluminum MIVEC V6 engine mated to a six-speed Sportronic automatic transmission.
The smaller 2.4-liter engine also powers a new "2.4 Special Edition" model that combines features of the upscale XLS with the fuel economy of the entry-level motor.
All Outlander models come standard with front-wheel drive and Active Stability and Traction Control (ASTC). What's more, all are available with optional four-wheel-drive.
The second row seat features independently reclining 60/40 split fold-and-tumble seat backs. On XLS models, the standard third row seat folds flat into the floor. With the second and third rows folded, overall cargo volume is 72.6 cubic feet.
Standard safety features include front airbags, seat-mounted side-impact airbags, side curtain airbags, anti-lock breaks, and a tire pressure monitor.
The "FAST" key technology is standard on SE, LS, and XLS models. The system lets owners unlock their cars and start and stop the engine without actually using their key. Instead, proximity sensors detect the key's presence in the owner's pocket, coat, purse, and so on.
