Mitsubishi's i-MiEV just recently made its North American debut at the Los Angeles Auto Show, but the all-electric four-door has just reached a major mile stone in its home market.

The Japanese automaker announced on Wednesday that it has produced its 5,000th i-MiEV electric vehicle at its Mizushima plant. Mitsubishi began producing the i-MiEV in June 2009, making it the first major automaker to begin mass production of an electric vehicle.

Of those 5,000 units, about 3,000 have been sold to individuals and businesses in Japan. Mitsubishi recently began production of a version of the i-MiEV for Europe, with a U.S. version slated for launch late next year.
