Mitsubishi Prototype X breaks cover: 2008 Lancer Evolution X preview

January8

Mitsubishi has revealed the Prototype X, a concept version of the 2008 Lancer Evolution X. The car was first previewed with the Concept X in 2005, and is now based on the production-ready 2008 Lancer sedan.

Power comes from a 2.0-liter turbocharged four cylinder engine with over 300 horsepower. A choice of a 5-speed manual or sequential-manual gearbox will be offered. Power will make it to the ground via a S-AWC (Super All-Wheel Control) system, featuring active steering and electronic yaw control.

Mitsubishi says the advanced technology represents the “largest leap in overall capability between two generations of the Evolution.” Gallery after the jump…

  1. I like it…not quite as bold as the all the sketches, but when is that ever the case? This would get my current vote over an STi.

  2. why in heavens name only 5-speed manual and not 6? any info about price, weight, performance?

  4. Yeap, finally an Evo I’m willing to drive everyday. That seq manual should be awesome…

  5. Very good looking, but a 5 speed rather than a 6 is a downer. Will be interesting to compare to the the future BMW 335xi.

  6. there are 3 levels of the current evo. only the top of the line one has a 6spd. i suspect this will b the same way.

  8. What’s with the dramatic dark lighting?
Can we get some lights in here so we can see the car for real?

  9. I mean there’s a big black spot with no light right in the middle of the car… I can’t see the damn car…

  10. Nice, no more gigantic “I’m a ricer” CN Tower like wing in the back. Now the MR edition needs a blue color.

  14. I like this over the current WRX, however, well have to see the next gen WRX and see what’s what.

  15. It’s nice. Too bad this is a prototype, which means they’re going to “water it down” alittle bit more.

Sequential gearbox = boring. I’ve driven several cars with sequential gearboxes, including a Ferrari 360 modena just last week, and I could tell you that it sure take away some of that “driving experience” that make some of these cars.
I like the 6speed on my Evo IX MR. Easier for finding that certain RPM range when downshifting without losing speed.

I really like the wheels alot. Interior layout is ok. Looks too much like the Eclipse though. The buttons on the steering wheel on a car like this is unecessary. Not feeling the mirrors so much. The little gills behind the front wheels are a nice touch. The hood is a little too crazy, needs to be toned down a bit, especially with that third vent near the windshield.
I like the blinkers under the headlights, very Porsche 997 Turboish. Speaking of Porsche, they called…They said they wanted their Crono meter off of the dash and given back to them. ;)

  16. buenos,

Looks like suede, silver carbon fiber trim under the radio. Doubt a suede dash would ever make it to production.

  19. If I lived in Colorado or other high altitude locale, I would consider this car. But other than that, it should stay on the rally circuit where it belongs. High insurance rates are going to kill sales of this vehicle in the next few years. Too many teenage boys buying them, hopping them up, and killing themselves with em. Insurance companies and cops have this car as enemy #1. Not a very good crash rating either. This is after all, a souped up Lancer econobox. It’s funny to hear all the Evo-lovers try to deny it is a Lancer.

  20. This car is absolutely beautiful, great job Mitsubishi you haven’t let us down. I am surprised that the evos competitor have not unveiled the new impreza yet.

I can predict this car destroying the 2009 mullet mobile camero without much effort!
You can call it a ricer. But let me tell you this ricer will wipe the floor of most of your so called muscle cars.

Why are people hating sequential-manual gearbox’s for? porsche have them and it is faster to the 1/4 mile than the corvette Z06.

    10/10 Mitsubishi!!

  23. “It’s funny to hear all the Evo-lovers try to deny it is a Lancer.” -Z06ified

I haven’t heard anybody that owns an Evo deny it’s a Lancer. Maybe it’s only people you know.
Everyone that knows anything about the Evolution knows that they don’t even USE the Evolution in the WRC. They use the Lancer, the Evolution is just a WRC inspired version of it.

  27. IMHO, this car has never been about style, just about raw performance, so it probably hits the mark regardles of asthetics.

i really love this car monster for sure hope to see an MR FQ 400 soon

  33. You can kind of tell this car is close to production by the way that the stereo and the brakes are branded (Rockford Fosgate and Brembo, respectively). Can’t promote partners too early, right?
LLN: When I saw the photos I thought, hey, there’s a sleeper edition of the Evo X without the huge audi-styled unigrille and the hood vents… And then I thought, dang it, they took out the Recaro seats too… And then it hit me: one of your photos is of a normal 2008 Lancer.

  42. I’m not afraid to say that I think this is a great looking car, Mitsubishi is a company that often times delivers “almost” products, but this looks right on the money. The interior materials look to be of high quality, the fit and finish to be high, while the exterior style is taught, aggressive, and commanding. I like it a lot.

Comment by LamborghiniZ, posted on January8 at 6:54 pm
  43. This car doesn’t do anything for me, except for the sweet plate to rest your left foot on. Way to have a clock (analog!) sticking up like a boil in the middle of the dash. Plus they’re only now hitting STi horsepower? weak sauce.

Comment by slick_nick, posted on January8 at 10:54 pm
  44. Much better than previous iterations.

But yes, lose the rear doors please. I don’t want a car that looks the part of a race car to play the part of a family car. Mutually EXCLUSIVE for me.

  45. I wonder if this Lancer Sedan(not this version posted today) will be as good at handling, 0-60, NVH, etc, as the Scion tC, or Mazda 3? Hope so. Looks decent enough.
And the 10/100K warranty is a big plus over these other 2 vehicles.

  50. sti 300hp… pffff why you dont get evo mr fq400 (400hp) that is faster than a lambo in the track a 50k$ car faster than a 250k$

this car is the fast car for the poor guy

Comment by leviathan18, posted on January10 at 1:15 am
  51. levianthan18 - it may be faster than a lambo but it has the turning radius of a bus and turbo lag up the ass =0, but a good top gear epidsode. Import the FQ333 (i think) if you want the best EVO.

Comment by ehhh?, posted on January10 at 1:28 am
  52. THE fq400 costs £44,000/ $86,000 new!

No way does it cost $55,000+ to get 113 extra bhp!!! and the people who brought them should be shot

FYI this is what happens when you lets those stupid English dealers fiddle around with a perfect product. The fq400 is just a warranty on wheels for a $55,000 premium and Mitsubishi motors japan had involvement in because the FQ400 car is a British aftermarket dealer option.

by the way England where are all your domestics gone?!

Comment by oddglat, posted on January10 at 10:09 am
  53. evo fq 400 was a limited edition. only 100 cars. so thats why its exspensive i guess. anyway its nice to have a saloon car that will beat a zonda to 60mph.

  56. very nice design, except the rear is a bit awkward. (sorta looks like a mazda 6’s exhaust design) which is very ugly. the rear doesn’t complement the front. people at mitsubishi should really reconsider redesigning the rear. Not much of a difference between the lancer and the evo, personally the evo should look more aggressive than the lancer. maybe meaner headlights, like the ones on the sketches. on the flip side…the interior?…VERY nice…….

Comment by designmatters101, posted on February16 at 1:02 am
  57. I wish they sold the Evo here. Many people in Canada buy the STi instead simply because we cannot get the Evo
