Mitsubishi has cancelled plans for an exhibit at the Detroit auto show in January, citing the need to cut costs in these tough financial times. The Japanese carmaker is the fifth company to withdraw from the event, following in the footsteps of Ferrari , Land Rover , Rolls-Royce , and Suzuki .

It’s not known if Mitsubishi was planning to make any major concept or production car unveilings, but last year the company used the show to launch its Ma href=”http://www.leftlanenews.com/mitsubishi-concept-ra-future.html”>Concept-RA and Lancer Ralliart. At the 2007 show, Mitsubishi launched its new Lancer sedan, and in 2006 it revealed the latest Eclipse Spyder. Not attending this year does not preclude the automaker from coming back next year, according to Automotive News.

Rumors continue to circulate that more automakers could pull the plug on their presence at the show, which could make NAIAS 2009 one of the most unusual Detroit show in recent memory.

On the rise is the number of Chinese automakers at the show, with another major firm making its first appearance in Detroit. China’s Brilliance Auto will have its first ever exhibit, and BYD will be returning for its second year.
