Mitsubishi's plug-in hybrid version of the 2013 Outlander will make its public debut at the Paris Motor Show this September. The crossover is being touted as the first to get electric permanent all-wheel drive and the first from a major maker designed from the start to accommodate either a traditional gas engine or plug-in electric tech.

The Outlander Plug-in Hybrid promises to deliver a whopping 126MPG, Mitsubishi said, according to AutoCar. It will have electric motors driving the front and rear axles, along with a gas engine under front hood. It will thus be able to operate in three modes. Pure mode will power all four wheels using electricity only. Series mode will have the gas engine assisting the motors as a generator, while Parallel mode will have both the engine and motors power the vehicle for maximum performance. Mitsubishi estimates total range of more than 500 miles and target emissions of less than 50g per kilometer.

It will be the automaker's first such vehicle, with a number of similar ones due to be released over the next 12 months. The car is expected to go on sale in Europe sometime in 2013. The gas-only 2013 Outlander should arrive in showrooms later in 2012.

The car is based on the PX-MiEV concept from 2009, which used a 1.6-liter, inline-four gas engine.
