Mitsubishi hasn’t had a true flagship since it killed off its Diamante sedan in 2004, but the Japanese automaker is set to receive a new range-topper from one of its cross-country rivals.
Mitsubishi inked a strategic alliance with Nissan last year, laying the groundwork for several OEM manufacturing deals. That agreement has already resulted in the swapping of two commercial vehicles – a Nissan-badged version of the Mitsubishi Minicab-MiEV and a Mitsubishi-branded version of the Nissan NV200 Vanette – and a new report indicates a luxury flagship could be the next vehicle to cross company lines.
According to Automotive News, Mitsubishi is set to receive a version of Nissan’s Fuga sedan. The Fuga is better known as the Infiniti M in the United States.
The rebadged Fuga will essentially replace Mitsubishi’s departed Diamante in Japan, but the Japanese automaker says it has no plans to sell the car in the U.S. Still, the Fuga could be an interesting prospect for Mitsubishi’s U.S. Lineup, where the outdated Gallant is current the company’s range-topper. It remains to be seen, however, if Nissan would ever allow such a move.
