Mitsubishi to supply cars to Saturn dealers?

05/22/2009, 8:52 AM

By Andrew Ganz

Mitsubishi, whose sales are down significantly this year, might have found the partner it needs in soon-to-be-former General Motors unit Saturn. The Japanese automaker has been talking with potential Saturn buyers about supplying Mitsubishi-built, Saturn-badged cars to fill the brand’s showrooms.

Sources close to Saturn say that Mitsubishi, among other automakers, is actively involved with discussions with several of Saturn’s potential suitors about supplying vehicles. GM has said it will build Saturns through the end of 2009 and would be willing to sell vehicles to Saturn’s new buyer for a period thereafter.

A source familiar with the talks says that one of the two or three serious Saturn buyers has been in talks with Mitsubishi, according to The Detroit News.

Mitsubishi has long been seeking a way to boost its North American production – and, if the deal works out, this could be just what it needs. The automaker recently signed a deal with the UAW that will see production continue at its underutilized Normal, Illinois, plant. Previously, the automaker’s CEO has said that the automaker might boost export production in Normal.

There is no indication of what vehicles Mitsubishi could build for Saturn. The automaker builds the Endeavor, Galant and Eclipse in Normal, though it could also import cars from another factory.

This is probably the one plan I’ve read about so far that actually makes sense. U.S-built Saturns made in Mitsubishi’s underutilized plant sounds like a win-win for both, as long as the cars wear different sheetmetal than the Mitsubishis. U.S. customers aren’t easily fooled.

It does not make sense to me at all. Mitsubishi could not sell its own cars and Saturn could not sell its own cars. Now if they swap those pieces of unsalable inventory it will become useful commodity? Lets face it either products sucked as far as consumers were concerned.

I know about Mitsubishi prowlers in off road racing, but where is that market? How many Evos you can sell against WRX? The rest of lineup as forgettable as plastic body Saturns.

So then GM could sell off the brand have mitsubishi make the cars and have no competition with there old brand.

As if Saturn dealers haven’t had enough bad news to deal with this year, now this? At least the rebadged Opel vehicles were competitive to begin with, but what would they do with mostly outdated, non-competitive Mitsubishi platforms? Perhaps they should change the dealership names to Pluto or better yet, Uranus Motors!

Uhg, no more Mitsubishis!!! The Lancer could be competitive with a nice interior – but otherwise the lineup is full of very outdated and ugly cars. It’s sad to see the once great Eclipse being an overweight gas hog.

PS – Don’t ever buy a new Galant, as if you were anyway, they can’t hold any value in the resale market since 70% of their production (if not more) is for the rental car market.

I like Uranus Motors! It is not exactly urea, but still close enough for piss association.

They must have a bunch of Raiders they need to re-re-badge.

i think this could work out well for saturn. They currently have nothing going for them with the exception of the two and a half re-badged opel models (sky, aura, astra). I consider the current astra as a half of a car because of the fact that it is a decent car plagued with a completely uncompetitive drivetrain. ( why not the european offerings as well, and with manuals in this market segment ? )

The current lancer would make a great entry to their lineup, albeit with a slight interior revision (better not worse).

revise the lancer sportback as well for a true astra replacement.

Eclipse (next generation?) COULD POSSIBLY make a decent replacement for the Sky and Sky Redline (with the 4b11 EVO or at least Raliart motor) AWD OR RWD ONLY hopefully the switch it to rwd based

Galant…ehhhh maybe not, but lets look for the replacement and then judge.

Skip the SUV’s in general, as the current / future market is mostly irrelevant after costs are considered.

im going to take back what i said about the SUV’s only because the endeavor (or its next gen platoform) could also possibly supply the basis for a Vue replacement

LOL @ A4!!! The sad truth is that it’s true.

Borat is exactly right.. what makes anybody think that rebadging slow-selling Mitsubishis and putting them in low-traffic Saturn showrooms will make them sell any better? GM couldn’t sell their rebadged crap as Saturns, and unlike most Mitsubishis, those vehicles were at least somewhat reliable! Makes no sense to me.

What? Mitsu couldn’t sell enough of their overpriced rice burners so they are going to try to pawn them off to saturn in hopes that a little red square on the front would make them popular?

Though… Saturn Lancer Redline sounds kinda nice.

This might just be a stop gap measure until the new Saturn can get its R&D going. It’s not ideal, but it’s better than letting the dealer network die like Daewoo. Now if Renault buys Saturn, we probably won’t need Mitsu, except maybe to use its underutilized plant capacity and one model (kind of like VW-Chrysler van).

Mitsu hasn’t had a product that interested me since the 300GT

I purchased an Opel based 2007 Saturn Aura XR 3.6L. It is a great looking car, fun to drive and had it for 2 years without a problem. Having said tat I would not buy a Mitsubishi sourced Saturn.
