Mitsubishi wants Lancer Evo to move upmarket

Mitsubishi says it will take a chance with the redesigned Lancer Evolution, which goes on sale in the United States as a 2008 or 2009 model. The company wants to broaden its base to include more than male performance enthusiasts, so it will offer a car that looks more elegant than the current model. The Concept-X, a peek at the redesigned model, was unveiled at the Tokyo Motor Show last week. “The overall shape is close to the production model,” said Akinori Nakanishi, chief designer for Mitsubishi Motors Corp. “We want a more mature looking, upscale and sophisticated model.” Nakanishi said that there will be more interior room than the current model and the new four-cylinder engine will produce at least 300 hp, up from the current 286 hp.
