Most four-door concept cars make use of reverse-hinged “suicide doors” to provide a clear look at the vehicle’s interior, while adding some exotic flair. For a Lincoln concept, such doors make even more sense given the popularity of the 1961 Lincoln Continental among car buffs.

But Lincoln ’s latest concept — the MKR — has regular doors and a full b-pillar. The internal debate over what type of doors to use for the concept was a source of much tension for the development team, according to Automotive News. In the end, the team decided to use regular doors in part because they are more feasible for a production car.

Production feasibility was an important factor in the design of the MKR, said Xitij Mistry, the designer who drew the car’s exterior. When design director Pat Schiavone saw the finished concept, he was impressed. “I love it, love it, love it,” he said. “To me, it almost looks like a production car, and that was a bit of a surprise. It’s real, and that’s a good thing.”
