Earlier this week, we brought you a new spy shot of the 2008 Mercedes CL-Class with very minimal disguise. Today, we were pointed to two more shots of the car which, for the first time, show the vehicle swooping ‘character line’ and fender flares. Unlike past prototypes, these test cars only have a thin layer of tape covering their exterior, rather than thick plastic cladding. The new model, due out next year, will be the first mahor update to the CL since the 2000 model year. [Photos: Front View | Rear View].

After seeing the S550 in pictures and then in person, I think it may be safer to defer my opinions until I see the CL550 “up close and personal”. The new CL might actually turn out to be “more” than these pictures show.

Wow…another Mercedes…yawn. Geez, I dont’ get it. How many models do they have? 20? 30?
And 75% of them look the same.
I swear everytime there is a NEW model announced, I already know mostly what it’s going to look like. Why don’t they change it up a bit? Make them unique.
Sorry for the rant…Had to vent alittle.

What on earth is happening? Mercedes seems to be returning to the design of the CL from the 90’s. Same goes to the C-class, where the next generation seems to hark back to the 1994-2000 model.
Mercedes is abandoning the oval headlights (E-class, current CL-class) and the twin headlights (current C-class).

I totally agree with Andre Neves and why dont they ever acctually name there cars other then branding them with stupid useless numbers that mean NOTHING AT ALL. The old musclecars, when they had numbers, it acctually ment something like the engine size or the horsepower.ITS JUST SO DAMN POINTLESS

Tibble, what do you mean? Most of the numbers that MB use for the model designations are roughly in line with their engine capacities. For example, the S550 has a 5.5L V8, the ML63 AMG has a 6.3L V8 and the CL600 has a 6.0L V12.
Andre, I have to disagree. MB’s look very different to one another, but they still retain some small design elements to identify themselves as MB’s. Look at, say, the CLS and the R-Class. They look the same? E-Class and the S-Class? SLK and the C-Class? There’s hardly any similarity between these cars, bar their grille and the three-pointed star.
As for you comment on “I swear everytime there is a NEW model announced, I already know mostly what it’s going to look like.”, does that mean you already know what the next-gen E-Class will look like? The C-Class looks like? Since you already know what it’s going to look like, please, enlighten us with your knowledge of how upcoming MB models will look.

sure…
C-Class: It’ll probably have their maybach styled tailights like this one here but retain the “shape” of the c-class rear end. Front end will look like a mini version of the new S class.
E-class: has already been updated slight for 2007. But next generation will look like this new CL-class up top most likely.
What Im trying to say is that their new models don’t excite people much when they are realesed. How many people do you know go around saying, “damn, did you see the new __-class?” I don’t. I hear alot of people getting excited over new cars from BMW, Audi, Acura/Honda…even GM(sky,solstice,suburban,corvette,etc.). Alot of people bash GM, but some of their new stuff is original and is getting alot of attention lately.
I’ll admit though, MB did a nice job with the new S-class. Except for the interior. They should of been original instead of stealing the design. Thought I was looking at a 7-series for a moment. But do expect alot of future models to look like that.
I don’t hate MB, I actually like some of their cars. They hit it out of the ballpark with the new S class, ML class, and who could not like the SLK class!? My favorite car from MB is the SLK 55 AMG…what a beautiful little car.a

Its not specically pointed at MB but like Lexus,
BMW, or Infiniti and such. They should have real names. Names you can remember. Its hard to remember about a car name thats mostly just numbers. Theres already enough numbers in this world.

Tibble,
Mercedes have ALWAYS had model numbers and letters attached to their cars. Also, names are sometimes a bit to memorable, and when the car turns out to be a POS, the last thing you want is everyone remembering its name (the Ford Pinto comes to mind).

wow… ah, a bunch of you are wrong.
MB is a big offender on misleading nomenclature:
-the new ’63s are using a 6208 cc = 6.2L displacement
-the previous ‘600s had a 5.8L v12
-the current ‘600 v12 is actually 5.5L (336 cu in *2.54*2.54*2.54=5506 cc)
-the new 550s are actually 5.4L, but they want people to know about the 80 hp the new engine has over the old 5.0L’s 302.
ferrari’s 612 scalietti is supposed to be a ~6L, v12, not 6.12L as would the F355 or 360 or f430 would suggest. It is actually 5.7L
The 599 GTB shows return to form….
BMW is adding a “5″ to the end of its new turbocharged 3.0L equipped coupes… I dunno why they don’t just call them the 330tci or 330T or something like that instead of 335i…. why bother with the i anymore, anyway….
What was that nonsense when BMW was calling its 2.5L 3 series’ “323.” Glad the current 6 displaces 3.)L so we can have some truth in advertising.
Oh, and the 650i, 750i, and 550i’s are all powered by the 380hp 4.8L from the earlier x5 4.8is…. There is no bmw 5.0L v8 now that the m5 has the 5.0L v10. The M3 will have a 4.0L v8 built on that architecture…
I love that the new GT500 actually has 500 hp. That’s truth in advertising at its best if it actually dynoes that… even if it’s calculated to be that at the crank… I would’ve preferred GT54S or something… that’ll remind us that this is the one with the longer stroke engine and supercharger. Output in the title is a bit limiting. What if you do some work to it… then you have to point out that it is actually not associated with its name except when it was new….

Everytime Mercedes launches a coupe we have so many objections til we see it in person… Then we fall in love. I think its going to do well it has some lines similar to the S550 that I think are very sleek. Let’s give a chance til we see it in late August.
