Chrysler won’t be holding a press conference at this year’s Detroit Auto Show, but that doesn’t mean the automaker’s stand will be completely empty. Chrysler’s display will feature a range of U.S. bound Fiat 500 models, including an all-electric version of the retro hatchback.
Chrysler has yet to spill the beans on the electrified 500 – including if and when it will come to the U.S. market – but a new report sheds some light on Chrysler’s 500 EV plans.

According to AutoExpress, the electric 500 will boast performance and technology similar to that found in BMW’s electric MINI E. The electric 500 will come packing 5,000 battery cells – no word on what type of battery technology, but presumably some form of lithium – giving the electric 500 a range of about 150 miles.

Such a large number of battery cells will undoubtedly weigh down the 500, which will negatively impact handling prowess, but the 500 EV is said to be capable of hitting 60mph 10 seconds and reaching a top speed of 90mph – respectable figures for an electric vehicle of the 500’s ilk.

Charging of the electric 500 will take a rather lengthy 10 hours, but a quick charging system is said to cut that figure to just 3 hours.

Although Chrysler has yet to announce a production version of the forthcoming Fiat 500 EV, we fully expect to see it on or roads – at least in fleet testing form – within the next few years.
