More details emerge on Ferrari F430 successor

02/04/2009, 10:51 AM

By Drew Johnson

Tid-bits about the replacement for the Ferrari F430 have been floating around the web for several months now, with the New Year bringing new details. Internally dubbed the F142, the newest Ferrari promises to be one of the fastest and most eco-friendly yet.

The F430 replacement will be the first of the so-called ‘green’ Ferraris, with a heavy emphasis on lighter weight and smaller displacement. In fact, several sources have indicated that the new model will weigh less than the current F430 Scuderia. While this equation for lower CO2 emissions should make environmentalists a bit happier, it will also put a smile on enthusiasts’ faces as it means better acceleration, braking and overall performance.

Details on the F142’s powerplant remain scarce, but there are a few signs pointing to a smaller displacement V8 fitted with at least one turbocharger, possibly even two. Direct-injection will also be part of the equation, which should further up performance while simultaneously reducing emissions. Don’t be surprises to see a sub-4L V8 cranking out 500+ horsepower.

Power will likely be sent to the rear wheels via the same dual-clutch transmission that debuted in the California. Ferrari’s racing developed regenerative braking could also be part of the F142’s package, making it all that much greener.

The arrival of the F142 – although that name likely won’t be used on the production model – will see Ferrari moving this class of car up-scale. Whereas the current F430 lists from about the same price as the new California, Ferrari will price the F430-replacement above the California, clearly differentiating the two models.

Although early reports suggested the F430 successor would be available as a hardtop convertible, FerrariChat.com says no such model is in the works. In fact, no convertible version of the F142 is planned at the moment, leaving the California as Ferrari’s lone open-air option.

Ferrari has yet to release any images of the new car, but those that have seen it say it is a truly radical design. Expect a futuristic look featuring some classic Ferrari lines.

No official word from Ferrari on when we will see the new car, but insiders say the F142 will make its debut sometime around October, making a Frankfurt Motor Show reveal a distinct possibility.

Sounds good, except for the price and the “green” thing. Who cares if a Ferrari is “green”?

so, if nobody cares, what wrong will it do if it IS green and it DOES help reduce fuel-consumption? and if ferrari proves they can built a supercar that goes green, maybe some of its tech will go into everydays cars… and thats not just the green part, but maybe also some of the sports-part..

so why bash them?

light weight is the clear future of performance, this would make sense whether or not they wanted to go green.

Hmmm, a smaller displacement engine? Could this mean something like the V8 from the 360? Fit that with a nice supercharger and it’ll sound… amazing. As for the whole green thing, that’s not a bad thing and the light weight is always a plus. After all, what Ferrari owner would complain about better performance?

The truth is, internal combustion is such an inefficient process compared to, say, an electric engine. Forget the green part- from a performance stand point, it seems to make sense. The Tesla Roadster, for example, makes 100% of its torque at 0 rpm. I’m surprised supercar manufacturers haven’t tried to harness alternative fuel technologies already. The fact that the car is greener is a bonus, but like many people say, people who buy Ferraris aren’t overly concerned with the price of fuel when filling up their cars.

@ Joshthenurse: SSC reputedly has the worlds fastest electric vehicle in the works. For more electric, check out UK-based Lightning’s new GT–a very sexy, and very fast specimen. Koenigsegg’s CCXR is biofuel capable, and, I believe, so is a version of SSC’s ultimate aero
.
I think electric, or perhaps, hydrogen fuel cell vehicles are the future of personal transport and performance-enthusiast driving alike. But for me, there’s nothing like the smell, sound, and feel of burning a little bit of petrified dinosaur, whether forced induction or normally aspirated.

joshthenurse, not quite true. In the beginning of last century there “ladies carriages” – electric cars for ladies to visit each other for tea. I learned about it from Jay Leno show. He has a sample. Range was 10-15 miles and it was clean and did not require to change oil.
Internal combustion may not be the most efficient, but the cheapest form of portable energy. If you think that electricity travels without losses via grid, before it gets into your batteries, you are mistaken. Not to mention that we can generate relatively small amount of electricity via solar, wind and hydro power. Most of electricity comes from coal burning plants. Efficient? not really.

Internal combustion may not be the most efficient but it shure is the most fun and exciting way to get arround i mean what would you rather listen to as you drive along, a thumbing V8, a barking V10 maybe the screams from a V12 or the whur of a tin can opener……… “petrol is passion” **yarddog your right green is a rubbish color for a ferrari***

Having to waste time filling up gas so often has a negative impact towards luxury at least for busy people like me. Those who say Ferrari shouldn’t go green probably still hasn’t own a new Ferrari yet as their mentality sounds like those without the ability to pay house mortgage.

will listening to a bubbling v8 or a purring v12 still sound so good when not being able to pass an EV?
not saying i dont like the sound of a petro-fuel engine, but its days may end… MAY i am saying; and wed be dumbfounded if we didnt make sure mobility is still an option, when the last drop of gas has been sucked from the wells…
