How about just throwing the frontier 4.0 V6 into the 350Z and G coupe and massaging it to put out 400+hp and making it rev to 8000, like in a TVR?

a really good question is we know that the engine develops 306 hp with the new car and that is most likely the automatic version since that is what is stated on other sites, so the question is how much hp does the manual have. and i wonder if this jumps to the xtronic cvt or a new six speed. and to the coupe, most likely a 3.7 with at least 330hp, infiniti follows in BMW's footsteps) i.e. examine the hp ratings of 330sedan and 335i coupe

nissan own3d in 6 cyclinders engines.
RB
VQ
I don't think the new engine are direct injected. If the VQ has it then it would probably beat Toyota's IS350 IMO.

Honda own3d in 4 inline engines. (2 crams vtec)
Erm.. B engines K engines and that S2000 one

can't compare honda 6 with nissan's. Honda is behind on their 6 compare to Nissan.
Interestingly nissan is working on VCR technology for inline 4.

Mileage with the VQ? I've driven my 1999maxima SE more than 20 times from San Francisco to San Deigo on one tank with about 1.5gallons left in reserve at the end of the drive. Always at 75mph average on the I-5. How's that for economy even at high miles (almost 140,000). Admitedly it's the 3.0L VQ with 200bhp and 210LB ft

As far as I know, Nissan/Infiniti has been using timing chains in the V6-and-up engines for a long time now. No reason why this new V6 wont get a timing chain.

Maybe GM could get this V-6 to supplant its pushrod v6 engines? If they are still saying the cost issue of their own DOHC V6 powerplants then bigger batches in mass production would surely bring down prices. Just like what Nissan is doing to its current VQ. One single architecture in different state of tune. That is if GM still insists that the cost issue is too big a gap to bridge.

You people consider 21/30 to be a gas guzzler?... you're either all hard core lefties, tighter than two coats of paint or insane. bring on a 4.5 VQ45 v8.

"Mike", do you have a clue?

Do a search on Honda's V6 and compare mileage ... 20 or 21 city/29 or 30 highway (depending on the site you choose), then do a search on Nissan's V6 ... for all intents and purposes they are identical despite the Nissan being a 3.5L versus the Honda being a 3.0L.

Then look at horsepower and torque (see above, other posts) ... no comparison.

Fact, my friend, all fact. Honda's V6 is the bigger gas guzzler, relatively speaking.

With 10% mpg increase you get what, 21 now? This thing is still a gas guzzler compared to Honda's V6 engines.

HA. Your honda engine is weak. That's why it gets better mileage. Anyway, 7500rpm is very impressive, considering the old version only revved to 6500 (7000 in the Z).Imagine when the 350Z gets this engine, and you rev it out to the redline through that magnificent dual exhaust system! Has anyone here ever heard the Z at full throttle? Sounds like a supercar with that sexy hollow growl.

I believe the 2007 Altima uses the same VQ35HR engine, rated at 265 hp new SAE standards, way up from last year's fake 250 hp, which is probably 235hp.

In addition to 300+ horses, I think torque at 270 lb ft also separates this engine from Honda's V6 despite both listing about 21/30 mileage.

Couldn't happen to a better motor :) The VQ is a top notch engine, power delivery is smooth and linear, and durability is top notch. I'd put it above the J30,J32 motors from Honda by a smidge. Mainly for the more useable torque.

Having owned one of the current crop of VQ engines for the past 3 years, I am still impressed with its torque and smooth power curve it generates all through the RPM range. For the money, you would be hard pressed to find a better engineered or reliable power plant that is skewed more towards performance than mileage - which is something I will gladly choose any day...

hmmm not bad...
all of these improvements are good. 10% increase in mpg and a (small) increase in hp is pretty good too. Keep up the good work Nissan.

> Honda's V6 is weak on torque (211 lb ft) and pretty good in horsepower (244) but its mileage is pitiful at 21/30.

I get 32+ mpg on mine at 65 mph, about 27 all around.

Besides the G35, will Nissan/Infiniti be putting this new VQ motor into its other offerings? Altima, Maxima?

Excellent engine. When the GT-R is released, the "other" VQ V-6 will also impress a lot of people.

They need to make a few impressive four cylinders now. Turbocharger options abound would be welcome!

Do a search on the "HR" designation ... one of two "definitions" I have seen is "high rev".

The last engine used a chain and I think it will continue in this version.

Honda's V6 is weak on torque (211 lb ft) and pretty good in horsepower (244) but its mileage is pitiful at 21/30.

The VQ engine hasn't been on Ward's ten best for a dozen (?) years now for no reason.

Honda does make good engines, but their V6s fail to impress me compared to Nissan's.

Honda's V6s are not much better on fuel mileage. The 3.0L V6 found in the Honda accord actually gets about the same mileage as Nissan's 3.5L V6. Goes to show what engineering can do these days.

More performance, good milage, and certainly a better sound, I'd have to go for the Nissan V6.

What does VQ35HR mean?
R use to mean supercharged. I don't believe this engine is supercharged.
VQ35DE was (D)OHC, and (E)lectronic fuel injection.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Nissan_engines

But enough about the excellent V6.
Has Nissan's problem prone QR25DE been improved in reliability? Will it stop its self destruct sequence now?

Mike: Great, except this engine actually has 'horsepower' and 'torque', where the Honda V6's are the same as usual.

So is it 306hp for both transmissions? I know that the auto was only rated at 280hp I believe and the manual was the 293. Not that it matters as anyone who really cared about the extra 13hp would get the stick anyways =0

With 10% mpg increase you get what, 21 now? This thing is still a gas guzzler compared to Honda's V6 engines.

It's actually a 13 HP increase over the old engine due to the new revision of power ratings.I think the Lexus is now rated lower.

Exactly, power is not everything, it's how well the power is being used by the car, I think this time Infiniti got an Ace in their hand.

Making horsepower is not that impressive or complicated in it of itself. Now the ability to do it efficiently from a relativly small displacement with good emission ratings, that's another matter.
