Renton,

Those roofs are fairly heavy, expecially considering it's a hardtop. If you had a component that weighed that much in the engine compartment, you would think BMW engineers would try to put a component equally heavy in the trunk to balance the car. I'm sure there probably isn't a moving counter weight in the car. So how do the badge snobs, and reporters, and the BMW marketeers keep lauding 50-50?

My friend owns a tuning shop and he routinely puts cars on a platform that measures weight balance. He has yet to see a 50-50 car. I think the badge snobs have been duped by the BMW marketeers. Just like they were duped into thinking forced induction sucks ass.

I think the E46 was a better looking coupe.

#2 Yoda - interesting point about the 50/50.

#3 SR - exactly.

As much as I think the 3 is ugly, it's better looking with the top.

A few things...

If it s folding hard top mechanism, I wonder how BMW will claim 50-50 forward and back weight ratio? (Really, what margin of error is their to claim 50-50? You are clearly moving weight around in the car, thus moving the center of gravity, unless there's a counter weight in the car. )

The styling of the 3 series never lends itself nicely as a convertible. IMHO. It just looks like a coupe missing it's roof. Somehow, the 6 series looks better as a convertible, as if it was designed to be a convertible at the onset.
