NEW FUTURE MARKET
  • Muscle car wars heating up as 2011 Mustang orders surge

    By Mark Kleis

America is in the midst of a two-front war – on one hand there is a strong push for smaller, more fuel efficient cars, and on the other there is a resurgence of high-powered muscle cars. Americans haven’t enjoyed such a strong selection of high-horsepower engines since the muscle car wars of the mid-to-late 1960s.

    The table was set

2009 was a year to rejoice for muscle car fans as America watched the return of the Camaro re-ignite the passionate debate between Chevy and Ford fans of whose muscle car reigned supreme. Of course, Dodge was not to be forgotten as its Challenger jumped into the ring with the most horsepower in the class.

The wars officially began in 2008 when Dodge released its brand new Challenger muscle car – available only in horsepower-heavy SRT8 trim, and for the first time since the end of production of the Camaro in 2002, the Ford Mustang had a direct competitor. By 2009, Dodge expanded the line to include V6 and R/T engine options, as well as manual transmissions. Also in 2009 was the sequel to Transformers, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen. GM’s heavy branding of the movie resulted in some serious pent-up demand for its then upcoming 2010 Camaro, which burst onto Chevy dealer lots by April 2009.

    The Camaro arrives

When the Camaro came onto the scene in April 2009 as a 2010MY car, it brought along with it two very impressive engines – a V6 rated at 304 hp and 29 highway mpg, and a V8 good for as much as 422 hp. At the time, these figures made the 2010 Ford Mustang’s 210 hp V6 with 26 mpg and the GT’s 310 hp V8 look quite dismal. But for 2011 Ford has upped the ante and jumped back into the ring with an all-new 3.7-liter V6 that turns out 305 horsepower and 30 mpg, along with the return of the venerable 5.0 GT – good for 412 horsepower.

“Fuel economy ranks among the top two reasons people choose vehicles,” said Steve Ling, North America car marketing manager. “With the 2011 Mustang lineup, we’ve found a way to offer even better fuel efficiency for V-6, GT and even Shelby GT500 performance drivers – while improving performance. And consumers are responding.”

But before Ford could get its new lineup of competitive engines on the road, in June 2009, the Chevy Camaro managed to outsell the Mustang on a month-by-month basis for the first time since October 1993. Ford managed to just barely hold onto the yearly lead, but only because the Camaro came to the market in April. Naturally, Ford has no intention of relinquishing its crown of the muscle car sales leader, and if early orders are an indication, they won’t have to.

Ford sees hope with the 2011 Mustang pre-orders surging

Ford just announced that the 2011 Mustang orders have already approached 11,000 in the first month since it became available for order. Ford says for comparison sake, that is three times the number of orders received for the refreshed Mustang in 2010 at launch. Worth noting, the new V6 is up 19 percent in share, to a total of 50 percent of all orders. This surge in V6 sales likely stems from the switch from what was generally considered a very dated and anemic V6 with dismal fuel economy to a class-leading V6 in terms of both power and efficiency (25 percent better fuel economy compared to 2010).

Interestingly, Chevy says that two out of three buyers of the Camaro have thus far opted for the V8-equipped SS model, moving in the opposite direction of Mustang buyers. One explanation is that Chevy has a smaller margin of price variation between the V6 and V8 models – making the roar of the V8 that much more tempting – despite the increased thirst that comes along with it.

In addition to the all-new 3.7-liter V6 and 5.0-liter 5.0 engines, Ford also swapped the iron block in the range-topping GT500 for an all-aluminum block, and as a result, has enjoyed a strong demand for that model as well. Ford says that roughly 9 percent of all orders for the 2011 Mustang were placed for the Shelby GT500. With a sticker price starting at $49,495 for the hardtop, and $54,495 for the convertible – Ford should enjoy the increase to their bottom line.

    Muscle car wars go global

As if the muscle car wars for the 2011 models wasn’t going to be interesting enough, both GM and Ford have indicated that they will be taking their muscle cars global in the near future. Chevy looks to beat Ford to the punch, confirming just 10 days ago that the 2012 Camaro will be heading to Europe for the 2011 calender year. GM intends to offer both its existing coupe and upcoming convertible models for European consumption.

Ford also confirmed its plans to go global with its muscle car, but plans instead to use the redesigned 2014, 50th anniversary Mustang to be its foray into European Mustang sales. Ford’s delay is a calculated move, likely intended to give the automaker time to gauge the success of the Camaro before fully committing, and thus reducing the risk of a sales blunder. Two other major factors are the expected switch to a slightly smaller platform, along with the introduction of an independent rear suspension (IRS). These changes will make the next Mustang a better fit to traditional European tastes.

This is great!! Lets see them rumble.

Love to see how the Camaro does overseas. Would guess that once sales stabilize the V6 will be the big sales leader.

folks predicted the v6 would lead sales here too, tho, right? and the opposite happened…

i really hope they don’t eff up the styling of the 2014…the 2010 revision was a nice evolution…and the fastback styling is great…so current engines + irs + lighter weight + fastback = winner…don’t screw up my equation, ford…

No surprise here. I said it before… Ford should just have left the ’05 to ’09 body style alone for one more year until the new one was fully cooked. I really doubt it would have made much difference in sales.

I like the Mustang very much, but I will admit I see it as a chick car more than the Camaro. To save my asz – thats probably due to the over abundant V6 models that all of my daughters friends drive. And to put credit where it is due you just dont see any of the late 1990 Camaros around on the road anymore. I had one and the quality was terrible.

Ummm, these are Pony cars, NOT Muscle cars!

The Challenger is a Muscle car. BIG difference in weight hence why the Camaro can spank a Challenger when they both have equal HP and the Challenger even has more TQ! Can’t wait for the new 6.4L HEMI in the Challenger next year!

I would call 412 hp, 422 hp and 425 hp “muscle car” status. Even the lightest of the bunch, the Mustang, comes in around a still moderately hefty 3,500 pounds. One must not meet porker status to be considered a muscle car.

What many consider to be the original muscle car, the 1964 Pontiac GTO, weighed between 3,400 and 3,600 pounds depending on roof type.

The Mustang is my favorite out of the three, is actually the better car too, and is probably my favorite car of all time. But I agree the Camaro and Challenger look so much better than the Mustang, the Mustang isn’t bad but the Camaro and Challenger turns heads like no other and are perfectly sculpted and have perfect proportions. The Mustang’s look is getting old and worn out. But I’d still rather get the Mustang though because it’s the best of the bunch. I hope for 2014 the Mustang becomes smaller and lighter and receives a new, sportier look, but will retain a bad-ass powerful V8.

      Camaro>Stang

and when the camaro gets put on the alpha platform it will be just as nimble on the track as the mustang… but almost no one takes their cars to the track, so who really cares. Driving in NA is mostly boring highway, so why not get the car that looks the best and can still shut up and smoke out rice burners out at red lights.

“I said it before… Ford should just have left the ‘05 to ‘09 body style alone for one more year until the new one was fully cooked.”

That would make sense…and nothing Ford does makes sense.

      —————————————————————-

And I don’t believe that people should have to pay extra for a gimmicky handling enhancement package to make their Mustang handle as well as the Camaro.

But, again, IRS would make sense…and nothing Ford does makes sense. Especially when you consider thje fact that Ford already has a fantastic IRS system that costs no more than the ox cart SRA, weighs no more than the ox cart SRA, and can have it’s ride tuned independently of handling.

However in canada if one were to show up in my drive way it’d be the challenger SRT8 brand new cheapest is like $47,000. Then i’d sell it and buy a mustang GT and have like 10 grand extra to get some custom fabrication in the back for some nice wide tires.

Mark K, I completely agree with you. It was quite some time ago on this site that I got sh*t on for inadvertently referring to the ‘Stang as a muscle car… you might have thought I started WW4. There might have been some basis for the distinction in the ’60s because of the huge disparity in size between the original Mustang, Camaro and ‘Cuda and their much larger sedan based counterparts, but the minute they began stuffing the elephant blocks into those smaller bodies the line blurred.

And if you want to maintain there still is a valid distinction today just what is it that qualifies as a muscle car? The Charger… or the now defunct G8? I’d say it’s the concept of pony car that has ridden off into the sunset. They’re all muscle cars now, and whether they have two doors or four is almost as meaningless as the two door vs. four door coupe argument. Times have changed.

I think the ‘car guy” Mr. Putz shot his load with Camaro and it is obviously full of dead sperm. Engines were good, tranny was OK, but it looks like a nice German girl with huge flat arse and weights about the same: 4000 lbs. Even potent engines have trouble pushing such a pig. Ford was king of the market segment even with anemic V6 and not so potent V8 (just like Mr Putz from GM). But with competition Ford fixed it’s mechanical shortcomings, there is nothing self proclaimed automotive genius can do: you can’t change brand new car and you can’t drop 500 lbs of heft. I give Camaro 2 more years in production before line will be shot. Furthermore, it is not a car that can be sold somewhere else in the world, so they have to sell at least 50-60K (or maybe even more, since it is unique architecture) of them in US/Canada per year. It is a toll order and Government will not tolerate waste of tax funds on products that bleeds so much.

The next generation Camaro should get smaller and several hundred pounds lighter with a turbo 4 cylinder base engine and then work on up to the LSA, which for some reason isn’t being utilized in the Camaro, let alone the coveted LS9 that powers the ZR1. You can make as big a stink as you want about the Camaro being built in Canada, but the Toyotas made in the USA are out there killing people so…

    39. photo
      howsmydriving154 days ago

Looks, let’s be frank. Ford would rather build Transit Connects and Flex’s. That’s what Ford does best — building bland, stupid, farty cars for fat-assed Americans.

Ford has to be dragged kicking and screaming into building a Mustang that can compete with Camaro.

Mustang won’t really be on a par with Camaro until 2014 (when Mustang gets IRS), but by then, Camaro will have new advantages over Mustang. As I will say a thousand times, Camaro > Mustang. Always has, always will.

    40. photo
      cocojoe53154 days ago

Considering how long it took GM to get this Camaro to market, I don’t see the next gen. for at least 6 years. The Camaro is nice looking, but the interior is just awful. And for all that complain about the lack of IRS in the Mustang, the current setup clearly out handles the Camaro……

    41. photo
      Need4SSpeed154 days ago

Yeah, last time I checked everyone on here was saying that the Mustang is supposedly a better handling car than the Camaro. Even if it is from all the car comparisons I’ve seen the Camaro SS always netted quicker lap times and straight line performance over the Mustang GT….

Actually in C&D’s 2010 Lightning Lap, the Camaro SS had a quicker lap time than the Mustang GT, and was only 2 seconds slower than the Mustang GT500….

But we’ll see how the 2011 Mustang GT closes the gap.

Interesting that 11,000 people are willing to take a chance on their choice of what are basically version 1.0 engines. With all the automotive industry defects coming to light lately, that’s quite a vote of confidence in Ford.

“Interestingly, Chevy says that two out of three buyers of the Camaro have thus far opted for the V8-equipped SS model, moving in the opposite direction of Mustang buyers. One explanation is that Chevy has a smaller margin of price variation between the V6 and V8 models – making the roar of the V8 that much more tempting – despite the increased thirst that comes along with it.”

Ahem, and the other explanation? It’s that Mustang has stronger chic appeal.

      carstuff153 days ago

mutton, do not get your Camaro concept comment. Other than the osrvm’s and a few other minor touches they are exactly the same vehicle.

That is one reason the Camaro is outselling the Mustang (month to month) by 25% (including a couple months of slow startup for Camaro) . As the war heats the monthly difference is now reduced to 13%. We will continue to see what happens.

bk2009 – Well is there any point for anyone to not be civil. Really, it is all a matter of opinion on what car people prefer. I know people that think Kia’s are one the best brands on the road. I don’t bad trash talk them. If they want to believe have good luck with it that is great. However, Kia is not for me. Truth be told, I would like to buy a Mustang convertible. But I also like the Camaro SS. Yes they compete with each other and they both have good and bad points to them. But I look at this way. There is a lot of engineering done in both of them that will GM and Ford both go back and find out how to make the both better. That is the beauty of competition.

BK2009 – I guess I am just a little different for a car guy. I respect all makes and manufacturers generally for the technology they put together for us to buy. In many ways I prefer the Camaro to the Mustang mostly because I prefer the old technology of a pushrod engine compared to the more complex double overhead cam 4 valve 5.0L coming. That being said, Ford has done an awesome job of engineering this engine. Great article in Hotrod Magazine this month on the new 5.0L. I like the Mustang for the quality of the interior and how nimble it is due to less girth. I also love the styling of both vehicles (Camaro and Mustang). However, which one I would buy would depend entirely on how well I fit into it. This would probably be a sale for the Mustang as the Camaro is a little tight on headroom for a person that is 6’1.

AJM11 I have sat in both of them and I agree the camaro is cramped

Did any of you sat in a CRAMPARO before? I’m 5’7″ @ 155 lbs. and my head was about go through the roof, I could barely fit! There’s no interior room whatsoever,it’s a POS car ! As for the MUSTANG, just beautiful, there’s no comparison!
CRAMPMARO had better sales this past couple months because everyone is waiting around to purchase this model year MUSTANG due to the return of the 5.0. And also the base engine of 305 hp v6 is much needed today.Let’s not forget the badass GT500, awesome! In the next couple months sales for the MUSTANG will sky rocket while the CRAMPMARO will seize!! Go FORD!!!

HI54 – Yes the Camaro is cramped, but how did you not fit into it. I am 6’1 and 250lbs and I fit into it… Barely. I wouldnt want to hit a bump however as my head is way to close to the headliner especially if there is a sunroof.

      @ajm11
You fit in that thing? We’ll my hair is already touching the headliner, there’s not that much headroom, and I can’t drive with the chair reclined to the floor. It’s hard to drive leaning back, that’s just me. Anyways, go FORD!!

      ajm11153 days ago

@HI54 – I don’t know how it would be to drive it. I have only sat in a couple camaro’s at the auto show so who knows if I would be at all comfortable while driving it. From when I was sitting in it I believe the seat backs were reclined a bit which doesnt bother me while I am driving. But all things considered I find the Mustang more comfortable than the Camaro which is why I would opt for the Stang as well.

      “Mustang>>>>>>>Camaro

      look at the sales numbers”

Yeah…oh wait…the Camaro outsold the Mustang every month it was on sale last year…

      —————

And if the Mustang is a sports car…it is the absolute worst performing, worst handling, worst looking ‘sports car’ on the planet.

“Ford has to be dragged kicking and screaming into building a Mustang that can compete with Camaro.”

Really? Seems like the Camaro is the one who had to be imported from Australia to compete with the retro Mustang which wasn’t discontinued.

Oh, and why does the new Camaro feature retro styling, again? Oh, please, tell us.

Yeah…Americans should buy Camaros. You know, the car built in Canada by a company that is government owned because it can’t survive on it’s own.

The reason why Ford got by on mediocre cars for as long as they did is because they had no competition. Why waste money on a cash cow if people keep buying them?

While the introduction of the Camaro and Challenger is a good thing as they have improved the quality of the vehicles all around, there’s a reason why the Ford Mustang has NEVER had to stop production, it’s the best of them all and will always have the greatest, lasting appeal of the muscle cars. It will never die.

The new Chevrolet Camaros and Dodge Challengers and the latest version of the Ford Mustang are showing up in growing numbers at collector car events. Although the visual connection to older models may not be as strong, significant numbers of Corvette owners are choosing to leave their vintage machines in the garage and drive the new versions.

All you people complaining about no headroom in the Camaro, check this out: all of the car manufacturers based their driver height measurements on the average driver (male and female taken in consideration) abouit 5″8″ and no heavier than 180 lbs. My 6’1″ brother has a hard time looking through my Mustang windshield without squatting down.

“Yeah…Americans should buy Camaros. You know, the car built in Canada by a company that is government owned because it can’t survive on it’s own.”

Americans should be able to buy any car they want…and last I checked, Canada is part of North AMERICA.

And…please…the government does not own GM. 60% does not equal 100%.

I’m not a fan of the “government owned” title that seems to be enjoyed by many but a 60% majority is a majority that does support “ownership”. And even though I am a US citizen and understand that America is a term used most often for the US seeing as it is in our countries name it also applies to the North American continent. As for Canadians though, either accept being called Americans and being confused with US citizens or insist on being called Canadians but relinquish rights to be recognized as Americans. It doesn’t work to claim both.

I think you need to read my comment carefully. There’s nothing there that says Canadians aren’t Americans or not to buy Camaros.

Try to spin it, but the government owns GM. :-)

I have no beef with Canadians personally but “Made in” is normally associated with a country, not a continent. Claiming Made in Asia I’d say somebody is trying to hide their own country to sell products, Made in Europe is banking on another countries profitablity… Which is it with canadian products claiming to be Made in America?

^That is claiming, made sloppily by people in china and then imported through the U.S., or made by bud and jim boy in alabama. Either way, not a good idea if you’re trying to sell to smart people.

“Try to spin it, but the government owns GM.”

That must be the Obama math.

      60% = 100%

      Does that mean that 80% = 120%?

      And 100% actually equals 140%?

    93. photo
      masonicangel150 days ago

60% might as well equal 100% in business anything over 51% is the majority owner so whats your point realist? They own the company 100% or not!!!

Mustang is greater than Camaro for many reasons, lighter, more agile, better mpg, much nicer interior, better build quality, and MADE IN USA

I wonder if Ford fixed the water leak issues when they redesigned this new model. If they didn’t, DO NOT buy a Mustang. If you do buy a Mustang do not drive or park it in the rain or this will happen sooner or later http://editpacific.com/mustang.html. It took my Mustang four years to start the water fall that causes all kinds of electrical problems. This is not my car in the video, my car’s leak isn’t that bad yet.
