BMW has apparently put together a prototype lightweight coupe called the Z29. Based on the Z4, the car is said to weight just over 2,500 pounds. It features the same engine as the Z4 M and M3, and is built of aluminum and carbon fiber. 0-62 mph takes around four seconds. Further details remain very sparse, and it’s not clear if the car is a project between BMW and a tuner, or if hints to a forthcoming model. We’ll keep you posted as this story develops.

The long lightweight construction CoupĂ© with carbon fiber Monocoque and 343 HP strong M3-Motor empty 1,160 kilograms weigh and bring four meters it in such a way on 3,4 kilograms per HP – a value, which otherwise only many stronger sports cars like a Porsche 911 turbo (480 HP) or a Ferrari 612 Scaglietti (540 HP) creates. But BMW does not want to follow the trend to the achievement explosion unreservedly and tried therefore to strengthen its authority in the own technology center land hat with the topic lightweight construction: Z8 and Rolls-Royce phantom with aluminum space Frame made the beginning, afterwards followed the FĂĽnfer with aluminum front cars as well as M6 and M3 CSL with carbon fiber roofs. The increased employment of carbon fiber saves weight The two-seat prototype Z29 weighs approximately 200 kilograms less than three, however with the aluminum rear axle the weight could be reduced by 30 per cent to altogether 42 kilograms. Front and tail module of the body consist likewise of aluminum and with the Monocoque are bolted. The doors, in modular construction with an interior and an external structure, up-swinging upward, manufactured, are held against it at one hinge each. Lightweight construction windowpanes, carrierless wiper blades and an instrument panel as basic part, which is taken up of the air hoses of the heating, are further measures for weight reduction. And also in the wheel housings, the lagging and the exhaust system the technicians found redundant Pounds. With the M3-Motor moved into the middle of vehicle and the Sechsgang SMG transmission it precedes so correctly in the small CoupĂ©: 4.4 seconds needs BMW of zero on 100 km/h, three seconds for keeps in track from 80 to 120 km/h. And who has free travel on the motorway, it can bring on a point of 270 km/h. It harms only that the executive committee does not do with the official decision for a new sports car project so easily.

This prototype was built by BMW Technik – a part of BMW R&D department – for testing lightweight solutions. As seen on the blue-print the front of body structure is made from alu alloy (grey), and the rest from carbon fibre (blue).
The car will never make into production since it is just a working prototype and therfore its design is irrelevant.
Btw, “Zxx” cars have been Technik’s prototypes for a long times.
Regarding the alu-CF ody structure: the solution is not ready yet for production since the structure is still unstable and did not pass crash tests, but BMW engineers are working on the problem.
So sometimes in the not so distant future … Maybe even in the new Z8: expect some CF body structure parts.

Heres the (rough) english translation of what sean said:
(first post)
The Z29 of BMW is a pure prototype with optical parallels to the Z4 coupĂ© – however zero of chance on later series fabrication. In the easy building-coupĂ©, new materials are used, that take in later also into the series.
(second post)
Easy building-coupĂ© long the four meter M3-Motor strong with Kohlefaser-Monocoque and 343 HP weighs empty 1,160 kilograms and brings it so on 3.4 kilograms per HP – a value that otherwise only much stronger sports cars as well as a Porsche create 911 Turbo (480 HP) or a Ferrari 612 Scaglietti (540 HP).
Yet BMW does not want to follow the trend to the achievement explosion unconditional and tries therefore to strengthen its competence in the own technology center country hat in the subject easy building: Z8 and roll-Royce phantom with Alu-Space-frame made the beginning, followed after that the FĂĽnfer with Alu front vehicle as well as M6 and M3 CSL with coal fiber roofs. The increased use of coal fiber saves weighs weight the two-seater prototype Z29 approximately 200 kilogram less than a threefold, however in the Alu rear axle, the weight could be reduced around 30 percent on altogether 42 kilograms. Front module and stern module of the car body consist also
of aluminum and will screw with the Monocoque. The towards the top soaring doors, in module method of building with an interior structure and outside structure made, are held on the other hand at a hinge apiece.
Easy building pane of glass, strapless wiper leaves and an instruments chalkboard as part carrying, that is received by the air tubes of the heating, further measures are to the weight reduction. And also in the wheel houses, the warmth-isolation and the exhaust concern the technicians Pfunde superfluous found.
With the M3-Motor moved into the vehicle middle and the six gear-SMG-transmission, it precedes in the small coupé so correctly: The BMW of zero on 100 km/h, three seconds requires 4.4 seconds for the spurt of 80 on 120 km/h. Trip free and who on the freeway has, can bring it on a tip by 270 km/h. Would damage only that the board of directors does not do itself with the official decision for a new sports car project so easily.

Declan, it isn’t a production model it’s a testbed, so it won’t go on sale.
Why is everyone saying it looks like a Lotus?! It shares nothing with a Lotus besides it’s a small lightweight rocket.
Anyways back on track this is a nice car. Amazing power to weight ratio, it’s like a bigger brother of the Lotus in terms of performance. This probably won’t directly compete with Lotus.
Whoever says that there are Ford lights on this car are dipsticks. They’re remotely similar to Ford Fusion or Focus headlights. They don’t look that bad on this car.
But again this is just a testbed of sorts. This most likely is not the production model, but damn good looking though if you ask me
