Spied again: Mystery MINI mule

03/14/2008, 1:13 PM

By Drew Johnson

Spy photographers have once again spotted a very odd looking MINI mule. The last time we saw this mule it was riding on the back of a flatbed, but apparently its engineering is moving right along and the mule is now worthy of some real-world test driving.

But despite the mule’s second sighting, the true identity of this MINI remains a mystery. While some sources say this mule is actually the upcoming MINI SUV, we’re not completely sold on that assessment. The mule’s ride height does suggest SUV, but its overall length doesn’t. The MINI Crossman SUV is expected to be comparable in size to the Clubman, but this mule appears to be shorter than the Clubman.

If the mule isn’t the upcoming MINI Crossman, there are still a few other possibilities. We could be looking at the MINI Moke — which would be sort of a pickup truck/beach buggy — a chopped open-air Speedster or even a retractable hardtop convertible.

We’re not sure if the tires are any indication of what truly lies beneath the mule’s Erector-Set exterior — after all, it is a mule — but the low profile rubber tends to lend itself to a more sporting vehicle.

Whatever the case, we’re sure we’ll be seeing plenty more of this mystery MINI in the coming months.

They should call the post separating the front windshields the pussy pillar as it kind of splits things down the middle.

“We all live in a yellow submarine… a yellow submarine, a yellow submarine…” oh wait this is a Mini???

Lol Man Mini is really going out of the way to hide the looks of this thing. whatever it may be. Although a “Mini” SUV would be interesting.

Like I mentioned in my last post, I think it’s either something like the ACV 30 concept, or a MINI beach buggy. If it’s the Mini Beach Buggy, then no wonder why there’s so much camouflage, it would probably easily give itself away.

A Mini Beach Buggy would be cool jjayco08. If it was priced right 18-25k and was somewhat practical I think it would sell very well.

Reminds me of the old VW Beetle dune buggies. I’ll take on with a crate V8 please! :)

This is probably a configuration tester for changes to the powertrain, suspension, and chassis. My guess their doing preliminary tests for the 3rd Gen Minis.
