In an effort to differentiate the Busch Series from the Nextel Cup, NASCAR will be changing the types of cars raced, a new report finds. The next-generation Busch cars — which could appear as early as 2009 — will include the Chevrolet Camaro , Ford Mustang , Dodge Challenger and a yet-to-be-named Toyota model.
The switch is intended to give NASCAR’s three divisions — the Craftsman Truck Series, Busch Series and Nextel Cup — models unique to their series. The new Busch cars will be built on the old-style NASCAR Nextel Cup chassis.
The revival of the muscle car rivalry also seems to pay homage to the SCCA’s Trans Am series of the early 1970s when the Camaro, Mustang and Challenger all raced in the same class.
Sources familiar with the project said NASCAR has discussed the idea of switching cars with the manufacturers and has received a positive reception for the idea.
