Nearly 2/3s of Americans oppose more Chrysler, GM aid
By Andrew GanzA new survey released yesterday by pollster R.L. Polk says that nearly 2/3s of Americans – 61 percent – would object to more money being poured into the Detroit automakers, Chrysler and General Motors, in the form of low-interest government-backed loans.
Not surprisingly, the proposed loans are more popular in the Great Lakes region of the United States, where each state is, in one way or another, deeply ingrained in the auto industry. About 16 percent of those living in the region said they “strongly agreed” with supporting loans for the two suffering automakers, compared to just 4 percent of New Englanders.Polk did not share the level of opposition from other states because the respondent pool was not large enough to be statistically significant.
Polk analyst Lonnie Miller said that the results reflect an overall consensus of “it’s a problem, but it’s not a problem for taxpayers.”
President Barack Obama is aware of the public discontent with more automaker aid. He told ABC’s “60 Minutes” on Sunday that “the only thing less popular than putting money into banks is putting money into the auto industry.”
