NEW FUTURE MARKET
  • Nearly 2/3s of Americans oppose more Chrysler, GM aid

    By Andrew Ganz

A new survey released yesterday by pollster R.L. Polk says that nearly 2/3s of Americans – 61 percent – would object to more money being poured into the Detroit automakers, Chrysler and General Motors, in the form of low-interest government-backed loans.
Not surprisingly, the proposed loans are more popular in the Great Lakes region of the United States, where each state is, in one way or another, deeply ingrained in the auto industry. About 16 percent of those living in the region said they “strongly agreed” with supporting loans for the two suffering automakers, compared to just 4 percent of New Englanders.

Polk did not share the level of opposition from other states because the respondent pool was not large enough to be statistically significant.

Polk analyst Lonnie Miller said that the results reflect an overall consensus of “it’s a problem, but it’s not a problem for taxpayers.”

President Barack Obama is aware of the public discontent with more automaker aid. He told ABC’s “60 Minutes” on Sunday that “the only thing less popular than putting money into banks is putting money into the auto industry.”

I never believe these polls. No one I know wants to bail out banks or insurance companies. Everyone wants to save US manufacturing. Obama is full of sh*t.

I could care less about GM or Chrysler. I know they employ a lot of people, but there’s always Chapter 11. They need to get their sh1t together as well as the banks. I’m tired of hearing about more money that WE are paying for the companies to continue mismanaging and making horrible business decisions. This isn’t the movies where everyone gets a happy ending. Don’t even get me started on the bonuses…

of course people are going to appose this! if you were smart, you would appose this loan and force them to restructure and file bankruptcy!

hoosierhero: exactly my though. noones gonna bail out you or me if we fold up our business, so why should WE bail out companies that did their best to run themselves into the red?

stop blowing out tax money for them; now!
Help them, managementwise, give the taxpayer back the money you blow out. they are old and clever enough to buy the products they want from the dealer they want to buy it from. thats how capitalism and a free market works, everything else is communism.

Need More Oil For GM, what do you have to say to 61% of America?

It generally is looking more and more like GM and CHRYSLER will make it with CHAPTER 11 now than before the first loans. I’m not too surprised at the disapproval.

I’ve been on the fence about it, and I’m only still for more help to these companies contingent they are making real forward advancement. Even then, only to the degree actually needed.

What’s actually needed is the same thing as ever, GET THOSE BANKS LENDING!!!! If the banks had not crashed for their own stupidity, GM and CHRYSLER would have gotten that loans they needed that way and not by the “bank of last resort”, the US Government.

Some banker heads need to roll for this mess as a whole. Not just the Auto Industry in particular.

I will also say, and not lay blame on specific people, that I harbor serious resentment for Foreign commenters even pretending that they have some say in what the US Government should be doing. If you feel that strongly about it, get your sorry selves naturalized as US Citizens and vote then. Otherwise, keep that fool crap to yourself. Or should we start telling you how your government should be run in return?

its funny to me they think the 1000 people they probably polled speaks for 300 million.

We opposed more aid for AIG too… but it still happens.

The government never listens to the people… they have their own agenda. I haven’t seen any “change” for the better yet.

Polk admits they did not poll enough people in the article.
Most Americans want to save the auto industry, but dont see any real plan being talked about or in place that insures they will survive even with the money loaned. At present the media is selling us “the death of the auto industry”.
Everyone has lost a lot of money (on stock, 401K or houses) and is scared. Mosy people are giving the proverbial thumbs down to any new spending and now feel that the Fed is incapable of not giving away the farm and being taken by the corporations.

As much as I hate to help rescue the banks, I know that they must be rescued. GM & Chrysler, not so much. Regardless of what industry will prosper in US, banks are necessary ingredient of any prosperity. Banks are also part of our government (or any government). As Treasury is busy printing money, somebody must sell those greenbacks, that somebody is a bank. Deposit in US banks are guaranteed by our government. This is fundamentals of our economy. The only reason government is rescuing AIG is because AIG insured banks. Nevertheless, all CEO’s and CFO’s of failing banks should be charged with felony under SOX provision.

I’m gonna be very politically incorrect and state the following:

You had the crook president, then the war president, then the frat boy president, the war president part 2: revenge of the texas ranger (not as…hard to belive, but worst then the first one), and now you have te welfare president.
That’s why the brothers play with cotton money.
He had to get to president for you people to say “we are not racists, black people have rights too” . Voting was like a mass AA meeting.
Now Obama is afraid. He doesn´t want to do what needs doing like it has to be done because that can lead to a subconscious race war, and he also needs to get people happy, so he gives money away. To those who can trash him if he doesn´t.
And when he’s done, everyone will live on the projects.
He needs to flush on the whole auto industry smoking turd, and start to figure out what to do with all the newlly available unenployed.
give the baillout (the term itself couldn´t be more apropriate) funds to health, educacion, cience and tech, national state healthcare plan, and then, maybe, keep a small (but higlly advanced) auto industry to build your millitary, industrial, comercial and public transportation solutions.

61 percent of are unpatriotic, unAmericacan bastards that need to get a clue. If GM fails, we all fail. It is our duty to make sure GM is at the forefront of future payouts. Give them a blank check for all anyone else cares, they deserve it.

What is good for General Motors is good for America

NMOFGM, get a clue man. You obviously have no concept of patriotism, it’s called capitalism, not blind devotion. Plus, the chinese practically own us so I’m sure they’ll probably step up at some point since GM means a lot to them financially.

I personally think they should go into chapter 11, and then see what happens from there. GM quality has gotten much better and they’re finally making a competitive product, they just did the right thing at the wrong time.

      I’m generally opposed to bailouts.

Anything handed out should be taken as final.
      “This is all you’re getting.”
The bank bailout was rushed through and didn’t solve anything.

    22. photo
      gta89mike492 days ago

The banks were a bailout, the money to the auto industry are loans. If they file bankruptcy, more money will be spent by the government to get them through bankruptcy and none of that money will be paid back. Chrysler paid back all the loans from the 80′s and it can be done again. There is no way car sales will stay at 9-10 million units. Once the economy gets better, all manufacturers will sell more cars, and the loans, not bailout, will be paid back.

I don’t think Chrysler or GM deserve this aid. They’ve been making mediocre cars with bad reliability, safety, and gas mileage lately. I think Ford should be the last survivor because they did something about their issues.

I said way back when, whatever GM gets, the better make it work, because the soup kitchen WILL CLOSE!
I love GM’s lineup, but it looks like it’s too little, too late

It’s all a rouse. Who cares about a couple billion here and there. The big story is AIG. That was 800 billion that nobody really took notice of, but oh boy GM wants a couple billion and hold on.

      Capitalism:
      Good companies succeed
      Bad companies fail.

      I like economic Darwinism.

How about this: give money directly to the tax payers, not artificial entities.

We all know what happens when the government is in charge….
Republican / Democrat … it’s all the same

True, we can give $700B to banks, $1.2 trillion to buy toxic assets, yet we can’t give loans to manufacturing cars in this country???

No one seems to complain that we spend $10B/mo in Iraq, but we can’t give $30B in loans to aid our car manufacturers???

      Stupid Americans.
