New Audi team serious about rivaling Mini with A1

01/31/2007, 10:25 AM

By admin

Audi’s new CEO Rupert Stadler, new development boss Michael Dick, and new production manager Frank Dreves are all adamant development goes forward on a rival to the Mini Cooper called the A1, according to Germany’s Autobild. The magazine has also put together a new series of illustrations of the two-door hatch.

The first A1 variant will be a two-door “Shooting Brake” (sports wagon) similar to the regular Mini. Although Audi decided against building the TT Shooting Brake, it appears the concept will live on in the form of the A1.

Eventually, other variants may follow, and Autobild reckons a convertible version is almost a certainty.

The latest illustrations — presumedly based on insider info from Audi’s design studios — show a typical Audi design with clear similarities to the TT Shooting Brake Concept and the Mini Cooper. It’s not known if Audi’s design team has “frozen” the A1’s proposed styling, or if various proposals are still being considered. Production is expected in 2009.

So far, it looks much more substantial and sportier than the Mini Cooper. If Audi can price it competitively, it could be a hit.

Perhaps due to pricepoints, they chose the two-door over the hatch, but I would like to see this in the flesh. Audi is doing a lot these days…flexing their muscles to say the least.

This car will go head to head with the upcoming BMW 1-series and Volvo C-30. Premium hatches are all the rage Europe, so perhaps they can convince us Yanks that they are hot.

I love the fact that this segment is starting up. Can’t let Mini have all the fun! The C30 is still the one I dig the most. The 1-series will probably be hit with the proverbial Bangle Baseball Bat that it won’t have the slick lines or agressive stance.

This coming from a BMW fan.

I dunno. The Mini is gonna be a tough design to beat. Look at the people that drive it. The Mini’s a fun car and it looks like a fun car. And considering the fresh redesign is probably going to make it even better. Audi’s gonna have to try hard if they plan on taking customers away from Mini.

they have the right drivetrain… they have, arguably, the best designers in the business… the smaller Audi’s are a lot of fun to drive.

I think it’ll be a really good car. Something I would seriously consider if I was in that market.

They Civic used to be the same size as a Mini. It’s still a fan favorite. It also topped out at well under $20K not started at $20K. I’d be more thrilled if Honda or Hyundai said they’d be building a similar machine… I think most of us are in agreement, this is fascinating but not happy news. More like, “Ask me if I care next week” news.

AWD system for MINI is already developed (by Getrag).

Decision was made to wait with AWD offer till R56 platform is developed – to be able to offer another body variant with AWD, not Cooper hatch variant.

Whether AWD will be offered on Clubman sub-variant or other (completely new) body variant is still unknown to me.

Hmm… Leozug, don’t like what you read? Move on. Plenty of auto forums on the web. But why take a swipe at everyone, with out providing a specific example of your gripe? I know vehicles, and the automotive industry. There’s always more to learn, like anything, however I’ve been in the industry 13 years now. I’m an ASE certified master tech and service consultant. While my automotive knowledge is pretty vast, and I’ve personally owned well over 20 different vehicles, I certainly don’t think I deserve to be labeled a “fanboy” for anything. So I turn the question to you wise one. How old are YOU, and where do YOU work?

The only brand i know of that has the opportunity to be a true competitor to MB and BMW. Everyone here knows they have made huge progress in the last decade, and weather you like them or not you must acknowledge the fact they have done a great job turning themselves into an average luxury brand to one that is making BMW and MB sweat. Go Audi!

I like how Audi likes to entertain new ideas for models just about every other month. Why not, they get enough feedback from sites like these to get a feel on consumer based reaction for free.
This car is a good concept. Low starting price tag, wide stance, short overhangs, big wheels, big dual exhaust, large fog lamps – it’ll make an excellent addition to the Hot Wheels lineup, but won’t see production. Like the Shooting Brake, this one will cut into TT sales because it’ll probably use the 2.0L turbo with the DSG or 5 spd, just like the TT except for $10k less and in a lighter pkg.
