BMW held its official press launch for the new 3-Series coupe in San Francisco this week, and Leftlane reader Antti Hermunen was on hand to snap some photos. Several cars were on display at the St. Regis hotel Thursday morning. Eight images after the jump…

Wow, I was really hating the shape, only liking the 335i engine of the new 3-series but these pics may have changed my mind, especially the silver one. Much better looking and more cohesive than any previous photos by far…

a bloatmobile, a porker…bigger than a 5 series of just a few years back. the weight needs more power, the mass needs more suspension, it all costs more but returns less pleasure

Side profile is very much like the current GTO…..rear end is bland, looks Japanese, the front is all BMW, however, even the front is rather generic looking. Ah BMW, where have ya gone ?

Is it just me or is there a lot of the old 850 in that profile? Especially the silver one.

What the hell is taking so long. I remember when the 3 series was only available as a coupe. Anybody see the spare tire?

Do a software update to the 335i to get above 8.5 pounds of boost and you got a legitimate replacement for the space shuttle.

A lot better looking than the sedan, but BMW has been dropping the ball lately in many fields in which they previously excelled such as ergonomics, steering feel and the ride handling balance. That glorified appliance maker Lexus should not even come close to matching its abilities, but it does.

I hate how small the rear wheels look. Anyone else not understand why they’re so small? The proportions are off.

Clean design for the coupe, I love it! Understated just the right amount. Bangle must have been on vacation when they green lighted this one.

Disclaimer: I like the GTO too, so maybe it won’t sell.

Forgot to say…Reminds me of the 8-series. That is my favorite bimmer. After my kid graduates from college a used 8 series is on my middle aged crazies list.

Like it or hate it, Chris Bangle has created designs that get attention, and get people talking about BMW. Before he came on the scene, I remember thinking BMW was just another nice car marque just like Lexus or Mercedes. Now, BMW is unique, people either love or hate the cars, few are lukewarm.

Oh well I’m sure you could of designed a better front GMSUX, why don’t you go to photoshop and make one and then have it posted on to LLN and have hundreds of people like it (and the few haters/bashers LOL)? Then you could actually make that statement, but as of now unless you design them for a living (which you may do but I duno) then you can’t actually say that.
I like the front end the thing I don’t like is the rear it looks somewhat like a Civic.

I think it looks great. It is indeed longer than the 3Series sedan by an inch or two. I will be trading in my E46 very soon for one of these babies! The 328i is almost as fast as the current 330i (0-60 of 6.2 vs 6.1) and costs 2.5-3 grand less.

It’s funny how the people bashing this car saying it looks like a Honda Civic are probably Audi design advocates… when the A4 looks even MORE like the Civic.

“anonymous” … I think you might want to double check your claim of the A4 looking more like a Civic. Look again at that silver pic up top, and tell me it doesn’t look like a late-90s Civic (same lines), in addition to the rear-view two pics below.

Sure the lights on the A4 look new millenium Civic-like but that’s where the similarity ends.

Don’t be mad, it’s all right. So what if non-afficionados think you might be driving a Civic, does it really matter? I mean, you didn’t buy the car to impress the dummies, did you?

08/14, 1:43 AM

Okay, so I double-checked…

And no, I still don’t think it looks like a Civic. The A4’s rear still has that honor.

In fact, here is a picture of an late 90’s Civic… I can’t see the resemblence, so I’m obviously stupid.

Hey Northeasterner – I’m on the fence about getting a 2006 330i or a 2007 328i – you’re quote about the similar performance is very interesting to me. I’ve been wondering just how close the 328 will be, but can’t find any reviews on it yet (all of them seem to be about the 335). Do you have any links I could check out? Thanks.
