Looking to build on the high-performance R8 GT coupe, Audi has officially revealed an open-air version of the V10-powered supercar: the R8 GT Spyder.
Like its hardtop counterpart, the R8 GT Spyder uses a 560 horsepower, 398 lb-ft torque 5.2-liter V10. Audi says the R8 GT Spyder is capable of accelerating from zero-to-62 in 3.8 seconds, carrying on to a top speed of 197mph – just two clicks off from the coupe’s 199mph top speed.
Power is routed to all-four wheels via Audi’s six-speed R-tronic gearbox — no manual transmission will be offered. Although the R8 GT Spyder features Audi’s quattro all-wheel drive, the car should have the feel of a rear-wheel drive car, thanks to a 15/85 percent torque split between the car’s front and rear wheels.
The R8 GT Spyder tips the scales at about 187 pounds less than the standard car, thanks to a carbon fiber liftback, fixed rear-wind, upgraded brakes, reduced sound deadening and a new front windshield.
To give the R8 GT an exclusive look, the grille is painted matte black, surrounded by a single frame which is finished in matte titanium gray – along with the struts and slats in the air intakes. The lower front splitter is double lipped and is made from carbon fiber. On either side of the front fascia you will find curved flics to help increase downforce over the front axle – which are also formed from carbon fiber.
Gone are the distinctive side strakes that typically define the R8 models, as Audi has decided not to include them on any of its topless models.
The R8 GT Spyder’s interior comes standard in black Alcantara, but buyers can also opt for a black Nappa leather. In order to break up the sea of black, the R8 GT Spyder will come with a choice of titanium gray or crimson red accents.
Despite being designed for the track, the R8 GT Spyder also comes standard with plenty of creature comforts, including an automatic air conditioning system, DVD-based satellite navigation and a Bang & Olufsen sound system.
Audi will produce just 333 examples of the R8 GT Spyder worldwide, with 90 cars set to come to America.
Key Competitors
As a lightweight, driver-focused drop-top performance machine, the R8 GT faces competition from the Ferrari 458 Spider and the Lamborghini Gallardo LP550-2 Spyder. While more of grand tourer than the Audi, the Aston Martin DBS Volante still provides a fun drive to go along with its timeless styling.
