The Speed is the ne plus ultra of Bentley’s Flying Spur model range. It exists for those who feel that the standard, 552-horsepower horsepower Flying Spur is neither powerful nor sporty enough, and adds an even more potent motor and a host of subtle visual upgrades to create a truly world-class vehicle.
Inspired by Bentley's legendary Speed models that first appeared in 1923, the Speed offers a range of headline-worthy performance figures that belie the car’s elephantine 5500-pound curb weight. The benchmark zero-to-60 mph sprint comes in just 4.2 seconds, with 100 mph coming taking only 6.5 additional seconds. The car’s top speed is a Ferrari-rivaling 200 mph.
The powerplant responsible for the Speed’s physics-defying accelerative prowess is an upgraded version of the standard Flying Spur’s complex twin-turbo W12 engine. With increased airflow, a recalibrated ECU, lighter connecting rods and decreased internal friction, the big 12-cylinder puts out a staggering 600 horsepower at 6000 rpm and 553 pound-feet of torque at 1750 rpm. Also helping the performance figures is the extra traction of the all-wheel-drive system, which, additionally, is a big asset during winter months in northern climates.
Bentley didn’t stop at improving just straight-line performance, either. The Speed features a lowered ride height and an uprated and redesigned suspensio, as well as re-tuned steering. The result is commendable agility and body control for the car’s substantial girth. Added grip comes from the 9.5Jx20 multi-spoke alloy wheels with bespoke Pirelli P-Zero UHP performance tires, allowing the big car to pull nearly .90 g on the skidpad.
The Speed can be distinguished from its humbler siblings by subtle design cues which emphasize its performance credentials, including dark-tinted radiator and air intake grilles, wider rifled exhaust tail pipes and unique 20-inch multi-spoke alloy wheels.
Inside, as with the normal Flying Spur, the Speed offers wall-to-wall leather of a highly sumptuous variety, finely crafted switchgear and seemingly acres of gorgeous wood trim. Touches specific to the Speed include a three-spoke steering wheel, drilled alloy gas and brake pedals and “Speed” plaques on the door sills.
Standard and Optional Features
Standard equipment on the Speed includes twin HID headlights with washer jets, 19-inch alloy wheels, a tire pressure monitoring system, cruise control, keyless entry and ignition, rain-sensing windshield wipers and a choice of 16 colors. On the inside, one has a choice of 17 colors for the leather-appointed interior and matching carpets and seatbelts, there are steering-column mounted shift paddles, a sunroof with electronic sunshade, a DVD navigation system, Sirius satellite radio, a six-CD changer in the glove compartment and voice dialing through the integrated Bluetooth system. The front seats feature lumbar massage, memory and heat settings. The rear seat's outer occupants enjoy lumbar massage and heating settings as well. The trunk is power opening and closing.
A wealth of optional features is available to sate the appetites of those who demand only the very best.
The interior is available in a nearly limitless combination of different leather types, trims and stitchings, while a plethora of different wood veneers can also be specified. Outside, Bentley offers a range of two-tone color combinations.
A Naim premium audio system with 15 custom-built speakers and a staggering 1100 watts is available.
Convenience options include a cordless privacy handset with keypad in the center console, a rear telephone system and a rear-view camera to aid in parking.
The sunroof can be had with a solar panel to power ventilation fans to maintain interior temperature when parked.
Finally, to enhance the car’s sporting prowess even further, carbon ceramic brakes can be fitted and boast shortened stopping distances and are virtually fade-free.
Safety
The Speed protects occupants with a suite of six airbags, while traction and stability control systems help to prevent accidents from occurring in the first place.
Key Competitors
Competition to the Continental Flying Spur Speed comes from the Rolls-Royce Ghost, which offers an imperial presence and a sumptuous cabin, the less-prestigious but absurdly powerful Mercedes-Benz S65 AMG and the Aston Martin Rapide, which is the least spacious but the most sleekly styled of the group.
