BMW 's newest range-topper for its flagship 7-Series sedan is now hybrid-powered. Known as the ActiveHybrid 7, this model makes horsepower and 516 lb-ft of torque from a three-phase electric motor and a twin turbo V8 while still returning 26 mpg on the highway.

The ActiveHybrid 7 uses an eight-speed automatic transmission with the electric motor positioned between the engine and torque converter. A lithium ion battery combines with brake regeneration to help deliver better acceleration than the 750i sedan -- BMW says it will hit 60 mph in 4.7 seconds, making it the quickest hybrid in the world.

Depsite its impressive acceleration, the ActiveHybrid 7 also delivers a 15 percent improvement in fuel economy compared to the 750i.

The long-wheelbase version of BMW ActiveHybrid 7 includes self-leveling rear suspension. Both models are fitted with BMW's vehicle speed-variable Servotronic power steering as well as Driving Dynamics Control. The driver is able to choose the preferred shock absorber setting, the appropriate operation of Dynamic Stability Control, the shift character of the automatic transmission, as well as the throttle response and Servotronic steering assist.

The battery is housed in the trunk between the wheel arches to help preserve BMW's typical 50-50 weight distribution. The automaker says that 13 cubic feet of space remains, enough for four 46-inch golf bags.

The 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 puts out 440 horsepower and 475 lb-ft. of torque on its own, while the electric motor provides a 20 horsepower, 155 lb-ft of torque boost.

The ActiveHybrid 7 returns fuel economy of 17 mpg in the city and 26 mpg on the highway. Unlike some gas-electric hybrids, the ActiveHydrid 7 is not capable of accelerating using only its electric motor.

Special displays in the instrument cluster and the central display inform the passengers of the degree of efficiency and the current operating status of the hybrid components. The ActiveHybrid 7 is distinguished from the 750i by aerodynamically-tuned ten-spoke 19-inch light-alloy Aero wheels, and model designations on the trunk lid, C-pillars, and on the door cutouts.

The BMW ActiveHybrid 7 is also available in special Bluewater Metallic exterior paintwork.

Key Competitors
Besides the ActiveHybrid 7, buyers looking for a hybridized full-size luxury sedan hybrids can choose from the Mercedes-Benz S400 Hybrid and the Lexus LS 600h L . Those looking for better gas mileage and a lower purchase price than any of those machines should strongly consider the Mercedes-Benz S350 4Matic BlueTEC, which offers a coddling interior, the four-season traction of all-wheel-drive along with an impressive 31-mpg highway rating from its torquey diesel motor.
