The ActiveHybrid 7 is the gas-electric version of BMW's full-size 7-Series luxury sedan. It contains all the technology and comfort features of the normal 750i while achieving better fuel efficiency and, surprisingly, offering much more power.

The ActiveHybrid 7 uses an eight-speed automatic transmission with the electric motor positioned between the engine and torque converter. A lithium ion battery combines aided by a regenerative breaking system feeds the motor.

The battery is housed in the trunk between the wheel arches to help preserve BMW's typical 50-50 weight distribution. The automaker says that 13 cubic feet of space remains, enough for four 46-inch golf bags.

Under the hood of the ActiveHybrid 7 is 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 that produces 440 horsepower and 475 lb-ft of torque. The electric motor provides electric motor provides a 20 horsepower, 155 lb-ft of torque boost. In total, the powertrain pumps out 455 horsepower and 515 lb-ft of torque (hybrids require some fuzzy math to calculate power outputs) and delivers better acceleration than the 750i sedan -- BMW says the ActiveHybrid 7 will hit 60 mph in 4.7 seconds, making it the quickest hybrid in the world.

Depsite its impressive acceleration, the ActiveHybrid 7 also delivers a 15 percent improvement in fuel economy compared to the 750i: 17 mpg in the city and 26 mpg on the highway. Unlike some gas-electric hybrids, the ActiveHydrid 7 is not capable of accelerating using only its electric motor.

The long-wheelbase version of BMW ActiveHybrid 7 includes self-leveling rear suspension. Both models are fitted with BMW's vehicle speed-variable Servotronic power steering as well as Driving Dynamics Control. The driver is able to choose the preferred shock absorber setting, the appropriate operation of Dynamic Stability Control, the shift character of the automatic transmission, as well as the throttle response and Servotronic steering assist.

Special displays in the instrument cluster and the central display inform the passengers of the degree of efficiency and the current operating status of the hybrid components. The ActiveHybrid 7 is distinguished from the 750i by aerodynamically-tuned ten-spoke 19-inch light-alloy Aero wheels, and model designations on the trunk lid, C-pillars, and on the door cutouts.

Key Competitors
Besides the ActiveHybrid 7, buyers looking for a hybridized full-size luxury sedan hybrids can choose from the Mercedes-Benz S400 Hybrid and the Lexus LS 600h L. Those looking for better gas mileage and a lower purchase price than any of those machines should strongly consider the Mercedes-Benz S350 4Matic BlueTEC, which offers a coddling interior, the four-season traction of all-wheel-drive along with an impressive 31-mpg highway rating from its torquey diesel motor.
