The Chevrolet Silverado Hybrid is a full-size pickup boasting 22-mpg freeway fuel efficiency. Powered by GM's 2-Mode Hybrid system and a 6.0 liter gas V8, the Silverado Hybrid provides all-electric driving at low speeds and considerable fuel savings while fully loaded and can also tow up to 6,100 pounds. This 2-Mode system is shared with other GM vehicles such as the Yukon Hybrid and Escalade Hybrid.
The Two-Mode system maximizes fuel economy by using the electric power to propel the vehicle whenever possible and shutting down the gas motor when stopped. When the brakes are applied or the vehicle is coasting, the electric motors within the hybrid system create electricity that is stored in the 300-volt battery. With the fuel mileage savings of the hybrid system and Silverado's 26-gallon (98-liter) fuel tank, the Silverado Hybrid has a cruising range of more than 500 miles.
The gasoline half of the powertrain equation is a 6.0-liter V8 engine with Active Fuel Management and late intake valve closing (Atkinson-cycle combustion process) for reduced pumping losses and better overall fuel economy. The motor is good for 332 horsepower and 367 lb-ft of torque on regular unleaded fuel.
Fuel economy is rated at 20 mpg in the city and 23 mpg on the highway for both two- and four-wheel-drive models.
The Silverado hybrid comes well equipped with a long list of standard features that read more like those of a luxury sedan than a work truck. 18-inch chrome wheels, Bluetooth, Onstar, a Bose sound system with XM radio, and a backup camera are all standard. Like the rest of the 1500 family the Silverado Hybrid is available in regular, extended, and crew cabs with your choice of box length.
Other standard GM work-truck features abound including a standard tonneau cover and Z-71 off road packages. As always trailer and towing packages are available as well as dealer-installed bed liners.
Like all other GM products the Silverado Hybrid comes with a 3 year / 36,000 mile bumper to bumper warranty and a 5 year / 100,000 powertrain warranty. An additional 8 year / 100,000 mile Hybrid warranty covers the all hybrid components, including the battery.
Occupant Safety
Standard safety features include dual front, front side and side curtain airbags in addition to traction and stability control systems and a tire-pressure monitoring system.
Key Competitors
Aside from the mechanically identical GMC Sierra Hybrid, the Silverado Hybrid is currently the only gas-electric pickup on the market. However, the Ford F-150 equipped with Ford's EcoBoost V6 returns similar highway mileage while providing significantly more power and torque.
