The Dodge Challenger SRT8 Yellow Jacket is a special limited-edition model that pays homage to 1970 Dodge “Yellow Jacket” show car and other Detroit iron of yore. Based on the highest-performance member of the Challenger family, the recently upgraded SRT8, the Yellow Jacket distinguishes itself with a host of aesthetic improvements inside and out.

Just like the normal Challenger SRT8, the Yellow Jacket accelerates like the muscle car it is thanks to a 392 cubic-inch (6.4-liter) HEMI V8 packing a 470 horsepower punch. Also endowed with 470 lb-ft of torque, the engine mates to the buyers choice of either a six-speed manual transmission lifted from the discontinued Dodge Viper or a Mercedes-Benz-designed five-speed automatic transmission. Zero-to-sixty mph acceleration, which owners will pride themselves on, takes place the mid-four second range for either transmission; gas mileage, which owners likely could care less about, is rated at 14 mpg in the city and 23 on the highway.

Making the Yellow Jacket unique is eye candy like a Stinger Yellow paint job with black stripes, special 20-inch, five spoke wheels and Yellow Jacket logos on the rear fenders.

Inside, the leather seats are spiced up with a Stinger Yellow accent stripe, silver accent stitching and an embroidered Stinger Yellow logo. The driver’s seat also features a full adjustable lumbar position with seatback tilt, memory and an easy-to-reach release handle, while the front-passenger seat adds tilt and slide with memory, which makes it even easier for passengers to get in and out of the capacious (for the class) back seat.

The original Dodge “Yellow Jacket” show car, which evolved from the 1970 Challenger, was shown at various auto show exhibits beginning in late 1969. Painted pearlescent Honey Gold, the roadster was powered by the 426-cubic inch HEMI V-8 and carried a number of the famous Dodge “Scat Pack” performance features, such as a unique front spoiler, wider tires, heavy-duty suspension and brakes, and manual transmission, along with the Rallye instrument cluster and shaker hood.

As with normal Challenger SRT8 models, the Yellow Jacket features more than 35 advanced safety and security features, including standard Keyless Enter-N-Go and three-mode electronic stability control (ESC) with segment-exclusive Ready Alert Braking and Rain Brake Support safety features to improve overall vehicle handling and performance.

In addition, safety is provided by standard front-row reactive head restraints, standard full-length side-curtain air bags, driver’s knee bag and standard front seat-mounted side-thorax air bags offer enhanced occupant protection to passengers in the event of a collision.
