The GMC Savana full-size van comes in many forms, but unlike the Passenger variant, the Cargo version is intended to haul serious amounts of equipment and materials in either 135-inch or 155-inch wheelbase versions. For the latest model year GMC has updated the features and powertrain availability across the lineup, making the Savana Cargo more capable than ever before.

Because the Savana Cargo is made with fleet buyers in mind, it actually offers a lesser base engine than the Passenger variant, starting with a 4.3-liter V6 engine rated at 199 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque. The base engine comes mated exclusively to a four-speed automatic transmission.

Of course, there is also an optional 5.3-liter V8 as well, rated at 310 horsepower, 334 lb-ft of torque, which also comes mated to a four-speed automatic.

Stepping up past the Savana Cargo 1500 to the 3/4-ton and one-ton 2500 and 3500 models changes the base engines and transmissions, as well as other capacities. The Cargo 2500 comes standard with a 4.8-liter 262 horsepower V8 and a six-speed transmission and has two optional engines.

The first is a 6.0-liter V8, rated at 323 horsepower and 373 lb-ft of torque, and the second is a newly available 6.6-liter Duramax diesel which produces 260 horsepower and 525 lb-ft of torque

It's worth pointing out that the 6.0-liter engine also gains new tech for the latest model year with a fast-idle option, making it easier to run a host of accessories while idling at a worksite.

Of course one of the key aspects of the Cargo's capabilities comes in the form of weight and towing ratings. The base 1500 Cargo is capable of hauling up to 2,329 lbs in the van and towing 6,800 lbs behind the van.

Stepping up to the 2500 series Cargo in 135-inch WB form will yield a payload of 3,222 lbs, with a towing capacity of 10,000 lbs. Opting for the LWB version will lower the payload rating to 3,009 lbs and the towing rating stays the same.

Opt for the big daddy of them all, the 3500, and payload jumps to 4,187 lbs in regular WB, and 3,992 in LWB form. Towing comes in at 10,000 lbs for all engines and wheelbase lengths in the 3,500.

Other changes across the model line includes standard StabiliTrak on all models, optional G80 locking differential, OnStar Generation 9.0 (with six-month Directions & Connections plan) and XM Satellite Radio and Bluetooth are offered with the available digital radio.

There is also available (dealer-installed) Autonet Mobile WiFi Internet to aid business users for worksite connectivity.

Other safety tech includes four-wheel anti-lock disc brakes with Hydroboost, driver and front passenger air bags and daytime running lamps.
