General Motors has decided to expand its hybrid powertrain across one more member of its full-size SUV and pickup range, the luxury-laden GMC Yukon Denali Hybrid. The addition of hybrid technology to the normal Yukon Denali makes the Hybrid the flagship model in GMC's Yukon lineup.

Mechanically identical to the Cadillac Escalade Hybrid as well as the standard Yukon Hybrid, the Yukon Denali Hybrid receives the automaker's 6.0-liter V8 with Active Fuel Management cylinder shut-off and two electric motors packaged in the transmission capable of powering the SUV's electronics at stop and at low speeds. The Hybrid features a CVT rather than a traditional transmission.

In hybrid trim, this engine's output is down to 332 horsepower and 367 lb-ft of torque, thanks to an adjustment to the valve timing to reduce consumption.

GMC says the Yukon Denali Hybrid can achieve up to 21 mpg around town, along with 22 mpg on the highway. This increase in fuel economy represents a 50 percent increase for city driving, where most consumers spend their time, and where thirsty V8s suffer most.

Standard on all Yukon Denali vehicles are a myriad of features, such as tri-zone automatic climate control, a navigation-equipped audio system, Bluetooth and leather seating.

Luxury upgrades for the Denali Hybrid include new 22-inch alloy wheels, heated and cooled 12-way power (front) leather seats and otherwise upgraded interior accommodations. Three options are available: A power moonroof, rear-seat DVD entertainment system and side blind zone alert mirrors.

Key Competitors
In terms of fuel efficiency and luxury, the Yukon's closest rival is really the Cadillac Escalade Hybrid. For those seeking for a non-GM large SUV with a modicum of fuel efficiency, the only options are the slightly smaller and less fuel efficient (but more coddling) diesel variants of the BMW X5 and Mercedes-Benz GL-Class.
