The Yukon XL is based on the standard-size Yukon, but, as its name suggests, is longer in both wheelbase and overall length (by 14 and 20.4 inches, respectively). As such, this full-size, body-on-frame SUV is capable of carrying up to nine passengers and all their luggage.
New for the latest generation is standard stability control and a six-speed automatic for the heavier-duty 3/4-ton models and standard side curtain air bags across the range.
A 5.3-liter V8 as standard equipment on the 1/2-ton models, while 3/4-ton trucks get a 6.0-liter V8.
Power for the smaller eight-cylinder is rated at 320 horsepower at 5,200 rpm and 335 lb-ft at 4,200 rpm. This engine returns 15 mpg on the EPA's city cycle and 21 mpg on the highway.
The 6.0-liter V8 with variable valve timing and Active Fuel Management makes 352 hp at 5,500 rpm and 382 lb-ft at 4,300 rpm. It is rated at 10 mpg in the city and 16 mpg on the open road.
Both engines are paired with six-speed automatic transmissions.
The half-ton XLs are able to tow a maximum of 7,200 lbs in 2WD guise, while the 3/4-ton variants can manage up to 8,600 pounds in either two- or four-wheel drive models.
The rest of the Yukon XL is very much the same as its shorter counterpart, albeit, obviously, a bit roomier inside.
Trim Level Breakdown
The Yukon XL is available in SLE and SLT trim levels.
The SLE features standard air conditioning, (available tri-zone
automatic climate control), standard AM/FM stereo with CD player and MP3
playback, standard USB port for audio, Bluetooth for phone, steering wheel mounted audio and cruise controls and power door locks and windows.
There is also an SLE equipment package, which adds new features inside and out, such as fog lamps, rear HVAC controls, power seats, and a Bose premium audio system.
Alternatively, one can skip the SLE with the equipment package and go to the up-level SLT, which includes everything on the SLE with equipment package plus more interior features.
The SLT with equipment package adds to that: power tractable assist steps, power-operated liftgate, heated and power-controlled exterior mirrors, heated leather seats in the front and second rows, and available cooled seats.
Safety features include head curtain side air bags and seat-mounted side-impact air bags, both standard.
Key Competitors
Aside from the mechanically identical Chevrolet Subrban, the only SUV that can rival the Suburban in terms of sheer size is the Ford Expedition EL. Smaller "full-size" body-on-frame SUVs include the Nissan Armada and Toyota Sequoia.
